Howard HS Student Peter Banyas Elected 2021-2022 SMOB

Peter Banyas, a Howard High School rising senior, was recently elected Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) for the 2021-2022 school year. The Howard County Association of Student Councils (HCASC) held the election online, May 5-7.
Digital Testing for Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

Digital exams start on May 17th for students who have signed up and paid for digital versions of the Advanced Placement (AP) exams. Due to the timing of the exams and capacity for at-school testing, HCPSS is requiring that digital test takers participate in the exam from home.
Clarksville Elementary School Student Named 2021 Doodle for Google Contest Winner for Maryland

James Pang, a second grade student at Clarksville Elementary School, has been selected as the 2021 Doodle for Google art contest winner in the K-3 category for the state of Maryland. Pang is now entered into the national contest, where he will compete against K-12 students across the country to have his artwork featured on Google.com for a day, a $30,000 college scholarship, and a $50,000 technology package for his school.
HCPSS Students Advance to 2021 National History Day Competition

After winning first or second place at the recent virtual Maryland History Day competition, eight HCPSS students will advance to the virtual National History Day competition. Four HCPSS students were also honored with special awards at the state contest. In addition, Lynn Rashid, media specialist at Marriott Ridge High School, has been nominated as the senior division nominee from Maryland for the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year award in the senior division of the National History Day National Contest.
HCPSS Recognizes National Nurses Week 2021

HCPSS celebrates its nurses, health assistants and all other members of the health services team during National Nurses Week, May 6-12, 2021. Health services staff, led by Wagaman, have gone above and beyond this year as they have developed and implemented COVID-19 related health and safety plans, in coordination with the Howard County Health Department.
Reopening Schedule for Community Use of School Facilities

HCPSS is beginning to phase in spring and summer community usage of school facilities for childcare, school-related support groups (PTAs, booster clubs, etc), and Howard County Government and nonprofit organization events.
HCPSS Congratulates 38 National Board Certified Teachers

HCPSS recognizes 38 teachers who achieved certification between November 2019 and February 2021—22 first-time achievers and 16 who renewed their certification. National Board Certification (NBC) is the highest-level credential in the educational profession.

In-Person Learning Opportunities/Participation for Remainder of 2020-2021 School Year

Now that the hybrid model is in full operation, HCPSS schools have determined that limited space remains available to allow additional students to participate in in-person learning during the current school year. Each school will continue to work toward filling all available capacity by inviting additional students to return to the school building for two or five days per week.
HCPSS Students Place in 2021 Maryland State Literacy Contest

Three HCPSS high school students recently won top awards at the State of Maryland Literacy Association’s 2021 Contest. This honor recognizes some of the best young adult poets and storytellers in the state of Maryland.
