2022 Bright Minds Grants Support Innovative Classroom Projects

Eighteen Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) educators have been awarded grants by the Bright Minds Foundation, the school system’s education foundation. The grants, totaling nearly $25,000, will be used to fund innovative instructional projects during the 2022-2023 school year.

HCPSS Students’ Research and Advocacy Yields New State Law

After years of research and advocacy, HCPSS students have helped to pass HB 133, a Maryland state law that bans the use of coal tar sealants. The law will take effect on October 1, 2023.

ARL Team Places Second in National Personal Finance Challenge

For the second consecutive year, the Academy of Finance team from the HCPSS Applications and Research Laboratory (ARL) ranked as first runner-up in this year’s National Personal Finance Challenge, organized by the Council for Economic Education. To reach the national competition, school teams had to first win state titles and then rise to the top in a semifinal competition in May.

Stakeholders Invited to Provide Feedback on the HCPSS Feasibility Study

Stakeholders are encouraged to review the four redistricting options and additional information included in the study and provide feedback via online survey. Through the survey, stakeholders can express interest in participating in a focus group or a community feedback session this summer to help inform the Superintendent’s recommendation to the Board.

Guilford ES Wins Second Green Flag Award for Environmental Achievement

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Eco-Schools USA program has awarded Guilford Elementary School (GES) its Green Flag for the school’s exceptional achievement in educating for sustainability, improving the environmental footprint of the school grounds, facility and curriculum. Guilford is only the 8th school in Maryland and the 128th in the United States to receive the prestigious Green Flag, Eco-Schools’ highest honor. This is Guilford’s second Green Flag Award.

Intern/Mentor Program Provides Students with Unique Skills and Experiences, Preparing Them for Post-High School Success

Open to high school juniors and seniors, HCPSS’ G/T intern/mentor program is a year-long, credit-bearing course enabling students to work with a mentor in the community to identify a problem or question on a topic of the students’ choosing, conduct research, and make a meaningful contribution to the field of study.

HCPSS’ American Sign Language Interpreters Facilitate Educational Access and Engagement

HCPSS’ deaf and hard of hearing students have access to a range of support services, including those provided by the district’s American Sign Language (ASL) Educational Interpreters.

Updates to COVID Outbreaks and Contact Protocols

Following consultation with the Howard County Health Department (HCHD), HCPSS is implementing changes when a school experiences an outbreak. Also effective immediately, any student or staff member who is identified as part of an outbreak setting, not up-to-date on vaccines, and asymptomatic will be expected to test before coming to school.
