Multilingual Parent Leadership Program Application Deadline Oct. 2

HCPSS’ Multilingual Parent Leadership Program will begin on Wednesday, October 12. The six-week program is designed to help international parents navigate the school system and develop the confidence to serve as advocates for their children. The program also provides training for international parents to assume leadership roles in schools and the community.

On Sept. 21, the Howard County Board of Education held a work session related to the redistricting process to open New High School #13.

During the work session, two Board motions were passed, clarifying the implication of boundary adjustments under review.

The first motion exempts all rising 11th graders and provides the ability to opt-in for transportation. The second motion affirms that only rising 9th and rising 10th grade students will be redistricted to open New High School #13. This motion confirms that rising 11th and rising 12th graders will be exempt from being redistricted during this process. The Board also made several motions to request more data from HCPSS staff and consultants from Cooperative Strategies to inform the discussions that will occur at the next work session, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Virtual Parent Empowerment Conference, October 10, 2022

HCPSS’ Department of Special Education is hosting a virtual Parent Empowerment Conference on October 10. The conference will benefit both seasoned parents and those new to special education and will help you advocate for your child and be active and informed members of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP)/Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) team.

Career Academy Info Sessions, November 9 and December 13, 2022

Current 8-11 grade students and their parents/guardians are invited to attend in-person information sessions on HCPSS career academies on Wednesday, November 9 or Tuesday, Dec 13 at the Applications and Research Laboratory. The evening will include two 15-minute information sessions and then open to visit a third academy beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Student Use of Technology and Social Media

The use of technology and social media has become an integrated part of our daily lives and these tools have many benefits related to productivity, connectedness, and communication. While we can embrace technology and social media for many of its positive attributes, the use of certain platforms can present challenges, especially when it comes to children. At HCPSS we have and will continue to remind students of the importance of appropriate use of technology, and ask families to do the same at home.

HVAC Apprenticeship Provides HCPSS Staff with a Unique Growth Opportunity

Through the HVAC Apprenticeship, HCPSS employees are able to apprentice with trained HCPSS HVAC technicians and complete the 8,000 hours of on-the-job training required to earn a state license.
