Updates to HCPSS 2022 Summer Program Schedule

The original schedule for HCPSS Summer Programs included two days with schools closed: June 28 for the primary elections and July 4 for the Independence Day holiday. However, since that schedule was released, the Maryland Court of Appeals moved the primary elections to July 19 and subsequently the Board of Education modified the calendar to be open June 28 and closed July 19. As a result, changes have ben made to the summer programs schedule.

Robot Enables Home and Hospital Student to be Part of School Community

In 2021, Ellicott Mills Middle School (EMMS) student Dylan underwent chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant that left him immuno-compromised and unable to physically attend school. With the help of robot Rosie, Dylan has been able to participate in class and establish himself as part of the EMMS community.

Two Wilde Lake High Students Vie for Student Member of the Board; Election to be Held May 4, 2022

The Howard County Association of Student Councils (HCASC) will host the virtual general election for the 2022-23 Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) Wednesday, May 4. Abisola Ayoola and Oliver Song—both students at Wilde Lake High School—are candidates for the position.

Bollman Bridge ES Math Teacher Selected as a Presidential Award Finalist

Kate Sandoval, a math interventionist at Bollman Bridge Elementary School, has been named a Maryland finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for grades K-6 by the Maryland State Department of Education. Sandoval is one of just three finalists in mathematics in the state who will now compete at the national level.

HCPSS Students Advance to 2022 State History Day Competition

The Howard County Public School System hosted its 18th annual History Day competition in early March. This year’s virtual event, sponsored by the Office of Secondary Social Studies and the Gifted and Talented Education Program, included 171 project entries presented by 264 students, representing 22 middle and five high schools.

Board of Education to Honor 2022 Friends of Education Award Recipient and Nominees on April 7, 2022

The Howard County Board of Education will recognize Ying Matties with its prestigious Friends of Education Award during its meeting on Thursday, April 7, 2022. The Friends of Education Award was established in 2001 to salute exemplary volunteer contributions of time and talent that directly support academic achievement and safe learning environments for the HCPSS.

High School G/T Orchestra to Share Stage with Time for Three

HCPSS’ High School Gifted and Talented (G/T) Orchestra will perform with Emmy Award-winning string trio, Time for Three, at a concert May 15. The groups each will play separately and together. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online.

Middle/High School Students Invited to Virtual Mental Health Panel, March 23, 2022

The Howard County Association of Student Councils (HCASC) will host a virtual mental health panel for HCPSS middle and high school students. Interested students should pre-register to receive the meeting Zoom link.
