New Website and System for Emergency Closings

Effective December 1, HCPSS is launching a color-coding notification system for emergency and other non-scheduled school closings, including for inclement weather. The new system standardizes the school system’s operational status to five possibilities to enhance consistency, while promoting the safety of HCPSS students and staff, and adhering to negotiated agreements on staff availability.
Ravens Celebrate Guilford Elementary as a Top PLAY 60 School

Earlier this month, Guilford Elementary School received a visit from the Baltimore Ravens, who cheered on the school’s success with the PLAY 60 Challenge. The NFL program inspires kids to get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day in school and at home.
HCPSS Administrators Sweep 2019 National Elementary Principal Awards

Howard County administrators were the sole Maryland winners for the elementary school principal and assistant principal awards from the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
Board Approves 2020–2021 Academic Calendar

The Howard County Board of Education approved the 2020–2021 academic calendar, with the school year running August 25, 2020-June 10, 2021.
Board of Education Approves $100,000 Grant to Help Prevent School Violence

The HCPSS Board of Education approved a $100,000 STOP School Violence: Prevention and Mental Health Training Program grant from the U.S. Department of Justice and Bureau of Justice Assistance. The award addresses multiple mental health training and implementation initiatives, including suicide prevention, crisis intervention teams and behavior threat assessment teams.
Building Friendships Through Folly Quarter’s Lunch Buddies

Falcon Lunch Buddies pairs Academic Life Skills (ALS) students with peers. The voluntary program encourages the students to have genuine conversations and connections in an informal setting.
Hammond Middle Math ITL Selected as a Presidential Award Finalist

Hammond Middle School Mathematics Instructional Team Leader Stacie Marvin has been named as one of six finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Legionella Testing on Cooling Towers

HCPSS began proactively testing for the bacteria Legionella in September 2019. Those test results are available online. HCPSS will continue to test all cooling towers annually.
AP Exam Registration

Online registration for AP exams in the College Board AP Classroom portal and online payment for exams has now closed. To register, submit paper registration forms and checks, payable to the school, to your school’s AP Coordinator.
HCPSS Participates in 2019 Farm-City Celebration

HCPSS took part in this year’s Howard County Farm-City Celebration. Farm-City is a two-week celebration bringing rural and urban communities together through fun events across Howard County.
