Staff Focus: Allison Whitney, Community and Workforce Engagement Specialist

Allison Whitney, HCPSS’ Community and Workforce Engagement Specialist, leads the district’s staff well-being and recognition efforts. She also plays a large role in community engagement around major school system efforts, helping to support engagement opportunities and coordinating the work of various advisory committees.

All HCPSS In-Person Opportunities Suspended Beginning November 19, 2020; Instruction Will Be Fully Virtual

Due to rapidly increasing health metrics across the county, and in consultation with the Howard County Health Department (HCHD), all current HCPSS in-person opportunities will be suspended and students will return to a fully virtual environment beginning Thursday, November 19, 2020.

Athletics In-Person Conditioning Canceled; Winter Athletics Scheduled to Begin December 7, 2020

Due to the recent rapid escalation of COVID-19 cases in Howard County, and in consultation with the Howard County Health Department (HCHD), in-person athletic conditioning, previously scheduled to begin on Monday, November 16, is canceled.

COVID-19 Positive Case Communication and Parent/Guardian Expectations

As HCPSS staff continue to prepare for, and work toward the return of students to our physical classrooms, it is important that parents/guardians understand when they will be notified of positive cases in their child’s school community, as well as the expectations for parents/guardians to promptly notify school staff if a family member tests positive or is displaying symptoms.

Winter Athletics Registration Opens; Season Scheduled to Run Dec. 7, 2020-Feb. 13, 2021

Online registration for winter athletics is now open. The winter athletics competition season is scheduled to run Monday, December 7, 2020-Saturday, February 13, 2021.

Apprenticeship Maryland Student Works on Hammond HS Construction

Long Reach High School senior Christopher Borja is enjoying his electrical apprenticeship with Altimate Electric through the Apprenticeship Maryland program, which is in its second year at HCPSS. The Career and Technical Education academy enables students to “earn and learn” through on-the-job training and related instruction, and can lead to certification, licensing, and in some cases, the completion of year one of registered apprenticeship.

SROs in Schools Virtual Town Hall, November 12, 2020

Centennial Teacher Honored with German Teaching Award

The American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) recently recognized Daniel Desmond, Centennial High School German teacher and World Language instructional team leader, with a Goethe‐Institut/AATG Certificate of Merit. He is one of seven educators who has received this national award, which honors achievement in furthering German teaching in the United States.

Environmental Forum: Virtual Discussion Series for Middle and High School Students , December 2020-January 2021

HCPSS middle and high school students are invited to participate in a free weekly discussion series on environmental topics, offered in partnership with the Howard County Conservancy. Each week, participants will hear from an expert on an environmental topic, then join in a discussion on how the topic relates to our everyday life, both at home and in our community.
