HCPSS Launches New Inclusive Preschool Program

HCPSS has launched a new, inclusive preschool pilot program for eligible three-year-old children living in the Talbott Springs and Stevens Forest Elementary School attendance areas. The program is co-taught by both general and special educators, making it the first preschool program of its kind in Howard County.

Sophomores Can Apply for the Fall 2021 Student Climate Change Institute by Sept. 28, 2021

The Howard County Conservancy, HCPSS, and the Howard County Office of Community Sustainability welcome 10th grade students to apply for their free Student Climate Change Institute. Participating students will hear lectures from climate experts on topics exploring how climate change can impact public health, how environmental policy is made and more.

HCPSS/Prepare for Success School Supply Drive, Through August 21, 2021

HCPSS and Prepare for Success are hosting their annual drive to provide school supplies to students in need. The donated supplies will help to ensure that HCPSS students head back to school with the tools they need to succeed. Supplies may be dropped off through August 21 at Howard County libraries and Columbia Village Association offices.

Mt. Hebron HS Teacher Named Maryland Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year

Michael Gorleski, who teaches Career Technical Education (CTE) at Mt. Hebron High School, has been selected as the 2021 Teacher of the Year by the Maryland Career and Technical Administrators (MCTA) chapter of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE). This honor recognizes Gorleski’s commitment and contributions to CTE.

Introduction of New High School and Middle School Courses, Feedback Accepted Through August 20, 2021

Community members are welcome to suggest new middle or high school courses. To propose a new middle or high school course for consideration during the upcoming school year, please complete this short form by Friday, August 20, 2021.

HCPSS, HCEA and HCEA-ESP Announce Tentative Agreements

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) and the Howard County Education Association certificated unit (HCEA) and its educational support professionals unit (HCEA-ESP) announced today that they have reached one-year tentative agreements covering the 2021-2022 school year. The agreements will go into effect retroactively from the start of the fiscal year, which began on July 1, 2021, upon ratification and funding approval.

Howard County Public Schools to Eliminate Health Fund Deficit Two Years Ahead of Schedule

Howard County Public School System Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano, joined by Board of Education Chair Dr. Chao Wu, County Executive Calvin Ball, County Council Chair Liz Walsh, and system and county leaders, today announced the school system’s health fund deficit will be eliminated this year (fiscal year 2022) – two years ahead of schedule.

HCPSS is currently seeking Howard County parents/guardians, community members, high school students, and staff interested in joining the Mathematics Academic Advisory Committee. Advisory committee members share their expertise and exchange ideas to promote continuous improvement of the instructional program for all students and provide guidance and advocacy for the mathematics-related programs.
