Board of Education’s Community Advisory Council Seeks Leadership Volunteers

The HCPSS Board of Education’s Community Advisory Council (CAC) announces an open call for leadership volunteers to serve on the Executive Committee for the 2023-2024 school year.

The CAC serves as liaison between the Board of Education (BOE) and the community at large, meets monthly during the school year, and reports directly to the BOE. The Executive Committee receives from the community concerns, information, and inquiries about matters within the province of the Board and researches issues as appropriate.

Project Lead the Way Engineering Academy Provides Unique, Hands-On Learning Experiences, Preparing Students for College and Careers

Project Lead the Way features a series of classes designed to provide students with an introduction to basic engineering principles.

HCPSS to Host Unheard Perspectives Showcase Feb. 25, 2023

The HCPSS Elementary Social Studies Office, the Gifted and Talented Education Program, and the Student Access and Achievement Office will host its annual Countywide Unheard Perspectives Showcase on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Hammond Middle School. The event is the culmination of weeks of research by third, fourth, and fifth grade students about innovators whose voices have been underrepresented in American history.

Bollman Bridge Elementary School Partners with Savage Mill to Support Music and Arts

Bollman Bridge Elementary School (BBES) has partnered with Savage Mill to support its related arts programs. The partnership was formalized with a partnership signing on Tuesday, January 31 at Savage Mill in Savage, Maryland.

Wilde Lake HS Psychologist Named Howard County School Psychologist of the Year

Wilde Lake High School (WLHS) psychologist Dr. Chandra McKnight-Dean has been named Howard County School Psychologist of the Year by the Howard County School Psychologists Association. In winning the County-level award, McKnight-Dean is a candidate for the Maryland School Psychologist of the Year.

Guilford Park High School is Howard County’s Newest High School

Students who will attend HCPSS’ newest high school, formerly known as High School #13, now know the name of their new school: Guilford Park High School (GPHS). The extensive naming process started with a community survey back in October 2022 and culminated with the Howard County Board of Education approving the new name at its Feb. 9 meeting.

All-County Dance Ensemble Returns to HCPSS

It has been three years since HCPSS’ All-County Dance Ensemble made its debut performance. After a hiatus due to the pandemic, the group started up again this fall, featuring a new crop of dancers selected from the senior dance companies from each of HCPSS’ 12 high schools.

Centennial HS Counselor Named Maryland High School Counselor of the Year

Centennial High School Counselor Irene Khaksari has been named Maryland High School Counselor of the Year by the Maryland School Counselor Association. Khaksari was selected on the basis of her outstanding leadership, collaboration, professionalism, and efforts to support students’ career, personal/social and academic development.

Annual SMOB Convention to be Held March 21, 2023

Howard County Association of Student Councils (HCASC) will host its annual Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) Convention Tuesday, March 21 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Wilde Lake High School. Organized and led by HCASC members, the event will bring together 138 delegates representing all HCPSS middle and high schools for a series of activities designed to familiarize them with the candidates competing to become the 2023-2024 SMOB.

Middle School 2023-2024 Course Registration, Feb. 2-17, 2023

Middle school course selection for the 2023-2024 academic year will open for current 5-7 grade students Thursday, Feb. 2, and run through Friday, Feb. 17. Beginning Feb. 2, students/families may view teachers’ course recommendations, and submit course requests and alternate requests by selecting Course Request from the left panel, and following directions available online.
