HCPSS Superintendent Presents 2022-2023 Operating Budget Proposal

HCPSS Superintendent Michael J. Martirano presented his proposed operating budget for the Howard County Public School System fiscal year 2022-2023 (FY 2023) during a presentation to the Board of Education on Thursday, January 20, 2022.
Student Member of the Board Selected to Represent Maryland in Senate Youth Program

Howard County Public School System Student Member of the Board Peter Banyas has been selected to represent Maryland during the 60th annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) Washington Week, to be held March 6-9. Banyas, a Howard High School senior, is one of only two high school students selected to serve as a Maryland delegate, joining the national student delegation.
2022 Summer Programs Preview Available Online

Parents/guardians and students can now view/download the 2022 Summer Programs Preview, which includes descriptions of HCPSS’ four summer programs and enrollment information. The Preview can be found on the HCPSS Summer Programs webpage. Hard copies of the Preview will be distributed to the youngest or only student in the household at the end of January.
Running Brook Partnership Provides Diverse Books to Build Home Libraries, Inspire Reading

Thanks to a partnership with Always Reading, a Maryland-based nonprofit that works with Title I schools, Running Brook Elementary School (RBES) students not only have access to a steady stream of new books featuring diverse characters, stories, and perspectives; they also get to keep them.
Worthington ES Students and Staff Celebrate Kindness Week

Worthington Elementary School celebrated its annual Kindness Week with a series of activities, including a walk to school day, a kindness-themed obstacle course, and a “kindness crystal” expressing students’ and staff’s thoughts and feelings about the meaning of kindness.

While virtual instruction may become unavoidable for certain classes, cohorts or schools, it is a complex decision and requires careful review and consideration.
Update to Masking Guidance While Eating, Jan. 6, 2022

HCPSS has received questions regarding the updated masking guidance in schools and reached out to the Maryland Department of Health (MDH). MDH confirmed to HCPSS that eating is exempted from the strict masking policy for early return from isolation or quarantine, because it is necessary for students and staff to unmask while doing so.
Staff Focus: Joshua Simmons, Custodian Day Supervisor, Mount View Middle School

Joshua Simmons is the custodian day supervisor at Mount View Middle School. Every day, he and his four-person custodial team perform a wide variety of tasks to ensure that students and staff have a clean space in which to learn and work.
Clemens Crossing ES Students Celebrate Hour of Code
