New Partnership Spreads Acts of Kindness by Increasing Access to School Supplies

The Howard County Public School System has partnered with The Kindness Pantry to support teachers and students by providing an inventory of school supplies to schools.

HCPSS Students Named 2021 Carson Scholars

Thirty HCPSS students in Grades 4-11, who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and humanitarianism, have been recognized as 2021 Carson Scholars. Carson Scholars must have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and selflessly give of themselves, their time, and their talents to others.

The Council of Elders Partnership Nurtures and Recognizes Black Student Achievement

Since 1992, a partnership between The Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County and the Howard County Public School System has cultivated academic success and leadership qualities and promoted responsibility and community service among HCPSS Black students. The partnership was recently updated, so members of The Council of Elders collaborate with HCPSS to create and maintain a school system environment where all students are recognized, supported, strengthened, and empowered to meet and exceed high standards of academic excellence and student citizenship.

HCPSS Fine Arts Coordinator Earns National Art Education Leadership Award

Gino Molfino, Coordinator of Fine Arts for the Howard County Public School System, has been named the recipient of the 2021 National Supervision/Administration Art Educator Award from the National Art Education Association. The award is the highest national honor for arts education leadership,

HCPSS Board of Education Transition to Hybrid Meetings

The Howard County Board of Education will transition to a hybrid board meeting format beginning with the March 11, 2021 meeting, with some Board members and staff participating in person while others continue participating remotely.

Board of Education Adopts Requested FY 2022 Operating and Capital Budget, and FY 2023–27 Capital Improvement Program

The Howard County Board of Education on February 25, 2021, adopted its Operating and Capital Budget Requests for the 2021-2022 school year (Fiscal Year 2022), and Capital Improvement Program for FY 2023-2027. The Board also approved its Long-Range Master Plan for FY 2022-2031. The budget requests will be submitted to the Howard County Executive in early March.

Partnership with University of Maryland School of Music Enhances Access to the Arts

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) has partnered with the University of Maryland (UMD) School of Music to enhance student participation, achievement and retention in countywide music programs with the support of UMD School of Music students and faculty.

HCPSS Class of 2020 Graduation Rate Continues to Rise

The percentage of HCPSS students who receive high school diplomas continues to rise and to outpace statewide results, according to data recently released by the Maryland State Department of Education. At 93.4%, the graduation rate for the HCPSS Class of 2020 exceeded the Maryland average of 86.8%, and is up from 92.8% for 2019 and from 92.0% in 2018.

Howard County School Buses Outfitted with External Cameras; Citations to be Issued

School buses serving the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) have been outfitted with external cameras in order to ensure student safety by discouraging motorists from passing buses illegally, through an initiative implemented in partnership with the Howard County Police Department (HCPD).

Board of Education Feb. 18 Budget Work Session Rescheduled to Monday, Feb. 22, 2021

The Howard County Board of Education Virtual Work Session on the Superintendent’s Proposed FY22 Operating Budget, originally scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, is rescheduled to 2 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2021, due to inclement weather.
