Board of Education Honors 2021 Friends of Education Award Recipient and Nominee

The Howard County Board of Education will recognize the Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City with its prestigious Friends of Education Award during the 4 p.m. Board meeting on Thursday, April 15, 2021.

2021-2022 SMOB Election to be Held Online on May 5-7, 2021

The Howard County Association of Student Councils (HCASC) will hold its online general election for the 2021-2022 Student Member of the Board (SMOB) on May 3-5, 2021, with students voting on Canvas. The 2021-2022 SMOB candidates are Peter Banyas of Howard High School and Dhruvi Mirani of Glenelg High School.

Board of Education Welcomes New Members and Elects New Leaders

Three new Board of Education members were sworn in, and the Board selected Dr. Chao Wu as Chair and Jennifer Mallo as Vice Chair during the virtual December 7, 2020, meeting of the Howard County Board of Education. New Board members Dr. Yun Lu, Jolene Mosley and Antonia Barkey Watts were elected in November, and Christina Delmont-Small and Mallo were re-elected.

Board of Education Approves New Equity Policy

The HCPSS Board of Education recently approved the school system’s first equity policy. The purpose of Policy 1080 Educational Equity is to achieve educational equity by establishing expectations related to the identification and elimination of disparities in education outcomes.

Howard County Board Joins Class Action Lawsuit Against JUUL Labs, Inc.

The Howard County Board of Education has joined a lawsuit against JUUL Labs, Inc. for the company’s role in cultivating and fostering an e-cigarette epidemic that disrupts the education and learning environment across the District, interfering with District property and public resources.

Board of Education Adopts FY 2021 Operating and Capital Budgets

The Howard County Board of Education unanimously adopted its Operating and Capital Budgets for the 2020-2021 school year (FY 2021) on Thursday, June 18, 2020. The operating budget totals $918.7 million, an increase of $17.3 million over FY 2020. The FY 2021 capital budget totals $102.4 million, an increase of $45.8 million over the prior year budget.

Board of Education to Hold Virtual Special Meeting: Work Sessions on Fall Reopening and FY21 Budgets, June 16, 2020

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a Special Meeting on Tuesday, June 16, 2020. The meeting will include a Work Session on Fall Reopening at 4 p.m., and a Work Session on FY21 Operating & Capital Budgets at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held virtually.

Howard High School Student Zach Koung Elected 2020-21 SMOB

Zach Koung, a Howard High School rising senior, was recently elected 2020-21 Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB). The Howard County Association of Student Councils (HCASC) held the election online, June 2-3, as the originally scheduled April election date was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic-related school closure.

Board Schedules Closed Session and Reschedules Work Session, June 10; Postpones Budget Adoption

The Howard County Board of Education has scheduled a closed meeting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2020. The Budget Work Session, previously scheduled for 9 a.m., is rescheduled to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10. The Board has postponed adoption of the FY21 Operating and Capital Budget and FY22-26 Capital Improvement Program, previously scheduled at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, to a future date to be announced.

Board of Education Adds Closed Meeting and Budget Work Sessions, June 8, 9 and 10, 2020

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a Closed Meeting on Monday, June 8 at 4 p.m., and FY21 Operating & Capital Budget Work Sessions on Tuesday, June 9 at noon and 4 p.m., and Wednesday, June 10 at 9 a.m. All meetings will be held virtually.
