Board of Education to Add Superintendent Contract to Meeting Agenda for Feb. 10, 2022

February 7th, 2022

The Board of Education will announce a decision related to the Superintendent Contract during its meeting Thursday, Feb. 10, 2022. The Superintendent’s current four-year contract is set to expire on June 30, 2022. Maryland state law provides a timeline and process for the renewal of a superintendent’s appointment. That process, set out in § 4-201(b) of the Education Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland, provides as follows:

  1. The term of a county superintendent is 4 years beginning on July 1. A county superintendent continues to serve until a successor is appointed and qualifies.
  2. By February 1 of the year in which a term ends, the county superintendent shall notify the county board whether the superintendent is a candidate for reappointment.
  3. In the year in which a term begins, the county board shall appoint a county superintendent between February 1 and June 30. However, if the county board decides to reappoint the incumbent superintendent, the county board shall take final action at a public meeting no later than March 1 of that year.

The current appointment of Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano expires on June 30, 2022. In accordance with the law, Dr. Martirano has notified the Board of Education that he is a candidate for reappointment.
