In alignment with the recent federal action making Juneteenth a federal holiday, the Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano announce that Howard County Public School System schools and offices will be closed on Friday, June 18, 2021. This is consistent with state and county government announcements regarding closures

A project by two Howard High School students is featured in the 2021 Virtual Exhibit Showcase–presented by National History Day, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian Learning Lab–through June 29, 2021.
Burleigh Manor MS Places 2nd in 2021 You Be The Chemist Challenge
The Burleigh Manor Middle School team recently placed second in the 2021 National You Be The Chemist Challenge, presented by Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF). CEF’s You Be The Chemist programs are designed to inspire students, engage educators and strengthen communities to build a better world through the science of chemistry.
Long Reach Student Recognized in 2021 C-SPAN Documentary Competition
Long Reach High School student Nandini Bhattaram was named an honorable mention in the 2021 C-SPAN StudentCam documentary competition.
Her video, titled “Expanding Telehealth: One Step Closer to a More Perfect Union,” articulates the benefits of telehealth as demonstrated during the pandemic, as well as the importance of expanding telehealth to better serve vulnerable and underserved communities.
ARL Team Places 2nd in 2021 National Personal Finance Challenge
The Academy of Finance team from the HCPSS Applications and Research Laboratory (ARL) ranked as first runner-up in this year’s National Personal Finance Challenge. The team earned second place in showcasing their understanding of an essential life skill: how to manage money, whether you have a lot of it or not much at all.
Centennial HS Teacher Named 2021 Maryland Language Teacher of the Year
Centennial High School world language teacher Hui Liang was recently named this year’s Maryland Language Teacher of the Year by the Maryland Foreign Language Association. Liang has been teaching high school Chinese language for 24 years.
Wilde Lake HS Teacher Wins 2021 STEM Educator of the Year
Wilde Lake High School science teacher and instructional team leader Jamie Proctor was recently named a STEM Educator of the Year by the Maryland Tech Council.
HCPSS Seeks Members for Academic Calendar Planning Committee, Apply by June 25, 2021
The Howard County Public School System invites citizens to take an active role in developing the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic calendars. Meetings will be held virtually from 6–8 p.m. on July 14, 21, and 28 and August 4, 11, and 18, 2021. Committee members are expected to attend and participate in all meetings.
HCPSS Seeks Members for Student Representation Policy Advisory Committee, Apply by June 24, 2021
HCPSS is currently seeking candidates for membership on the advisory committee for the revision of Policy 2010 Student Representation. This committee will include at least one member representing the general resident stakeholder group. Members of this committee attend 3-4 meetings to discuss and make policy recommendations to the Superintendent.
