Message from the Superintendent: Coronavirus Preparedness Information and Resources

As the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID–19) becomes more prevalent in the United States and now in Maryland, Howard County residents are understandably seeking assurances from local leaders that they are prepared for every conceivable possibility and everything possible is being done to protect the residents in our county. Please know that HCPSS staff are dedicating significant efforts to collaborating with local, state and federal agencies to provide the most accurate information and informed guidance to residents and leaders in the county as possible.
Talk With Me Celebrates a Successful First Year

In its first year of implementation, Talk With Me • Howard County staff and volunteers have spread the word about the brain-building power of positive early interactions to more than 300 parents and almost 100 childcare providers, agency staff and community members in Howard County.

Message from the Superintendent Regarding Confirmed Coronavirus Cases in Maryland

Governor Hogan announced this evening that three cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) have been confirmed in Maryland. All three cases are located in Montgomery County and are contained. HCPSS schools and scheduled activities will continue until a change is deemed necessary by local and state health professionals.
Long Reach Teacher Inducted into Baseball Coaching Hall of Fame

Long Reach High School Social Studies Teacher Tim O’Brien was recently inducted into the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. O’Brien has been an educator for more than 40 years and was the head baseball coach for Wilde Lake, Oakland Mills and Long Reach high schools for 16 years.
Howard County to Host Regional History Day Competition, March 14, 2020

This year’s event includes 191 project entries presented by 268 students, representing 22 middle and 6 high schools. Over 85 teachers, Central Office staff, Board of Education members, elected officials, business partners and community members will serve as volunteers and judges to evaluate student entries.
Seven HCPSS Schools Receive AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award

Seven HCPSS high schools recently earned the College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female student representation in AP Computer Science Principles. The award went to: Atholton High School, Centennial High School, Glenelg High School, Hammond High School, Howard High School, Marriotts Ridge High School and Reservoir High School.
Atholton Elementary Spreads Kindness Through Blankets
February 28th, 2020
As an outgrowth of Atholton Elementary School’s recent kindness week, the 4th grade team decided they wanted their students to experience showing kindness outside the school walls. All 85 4th grade students have since created 50 blankets for the local Project Linus nonprofit, whose mission is to provide homemade blankets “to children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies or anywhere that a child might be in need of a big hug.”

Attendance Matters at HCPSS

HCPSS continues to emphasize the importance of attendance by expanding supports and interventions proactively and consistently across schools. Attendance is one of the four principles—attendance, access, achievement and acceptance—that HCPSS focuses on to ensure every child is on a path to graduation.
