BSAP College and Career Opportunities Night, Oct. 27

The Howard County Public School System’s Black Student Achievement Program (BSAP) invites all students in grades 8-12 and their families to attend the upcoming BSAP College and Career Opportunities Night. Students will learn about HCPSS pathways, network with working professionals, and explore post-secondary opportunities. The evening will highlight nearby colleges and universities, as well as local businesses within the Howard County area.

HCPSS/TCOE Community Academy: Navigating HCPSS, Oct. 15

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) and The Council of Elders have partnered to offer “Navigating the Howard County Public School System,” a virtual session focused on how to effectively maintain communication with your child’s school. HCPSS staff will provide a parent demonstration on how to monitor student performance utilizing school system online resources. The session also will provide strategies to help ensure successful parent-teacher conferences.

HCPSS to Expand School-Based Mental Health Services for Students

With funding from Howard County, as well as grants from the Horizon Foundation and the Kahlert Foundation, the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is expanding its school-based mental health services. Previously available in 45 schools across the county, these services will be available at all HCPSS schools by the end of the first semester of the 2022-23 school year. The services, including therapy provided at school buildings during the instructional day, are provided by HCPSS’ school-based student services teams in collaboration with community mental health agencies.

Survey for Naming of High School #13

HCPSS is now accepting public suggestions of names for High School #13, scheduled to open for the 2023-24 school year. Students, staff and family members are encouraged to submit their name suggestions using the online form. All suggestions must be provided through the online form by Friday, October 14 at 5:00 p.m. to be considered.

HCPSS Announces FY 2022 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), Annual Audit Completion and Elimination of the Historic Health and Dental Fund Deficit

HCPSS has received an unmodified opinion from its external auditor, CohnReznick LLP, which is included in the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for fiscal year (FY) 2022. The unmodified opinion signifies that the HCPSS financial statements are presented fairly and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. More significantly, the FY 2022 audit and ACFR represent an important milestone reflecting HCPSS’ steadfast focus on improving the financial management of the school system through the elimination of the historical deficit in the HCPSS Health and Dental Fund, reporting a fund balance of $5.95 million.

HCPSS Seeks Members for LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee by Oct. 21, 2022

HCPSS is currently seeking members to participate on its LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee. Community members of all sexual orientations and gender identities who have an interest in supporting LGBTQIA+ HCPSS students are encouraged to apply for participation.
