Get to Know HCPSS’ School-Based Career Academies

High School 2023-2024 Course Registration, Dec. 19, 2022-Jan. 17, 2023
December 14th, 2022
High school course selection for the 2023-2024 academic year will open Monday, Dec. 19, 2022 8:00 AM, and run through Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023 4:00 PM, for current 8-11 grade students. Beginning Dec. 19, students may view teachers’ course recommendations, and submit course requests and alternate requests by logging into HCPSS Connect.

Students Engage in Discussions with HCPSS Leaders, Aiming to Make a Difference in Their Community

Student representatives from every Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) high school recently had the opportunity to meet with HCPSS leaders and Board of Education members. The event aimed to bridge a gap between students and adults within the school system, and provide a means for students to communicate issues of importance.
Abisola Ayoola is Using Her Role as Student Member of the Board to Increase Student Engagement and Improve Student Experience

Abisola Ayoola has been hard at work since she became the Student Member of the Board (SMOB) last year. Ayoola will continue to work to engage students to improve student experiences and be sure all students have a voice in the issues that are most important to them.
Inclusive Classes Teach Art, Communication and Empathy

Every week, students from two third-grade and two fifth-grade classes from Fulton Elementary School travel to the Cedar Lane School to participate in an inclusive art class. In addition to learning about different artists, artistic techniques, and mediums, students in the class learn how to communicate with and relate to students with special needs.
Newly Elected Board Members Sworn in; Board Elects New Chair and Vice Chair

Dr. Linfeng Chen and Jacky McCoy were sworn as members of the Board of Education at the Dec. 5 Board meeting They were elected to fill the two at-large vacancies on the Board following the decision by Vicky Cutroneo and Chao Wu to not seek reelection.
Staff Focus: Darius Martin, Mail Room Assistant

If you work in or have visited the Howard County Public Schools System’s Department of Education building/Central Office (CO), you probably know or have seen Darius Martin. Martin works in the mailroom, where he meters and records mail and packages, sorts mail for distribution via HCPSS’ pony express system, stuffs and labels materials, operates assorted office equipment (including a web-based package tracking system), and performs other administrative duties. Martin also hand-delivers and collects mail from Central Office staff twice a day.
Spring 2023 Evening School Registration Open Through Jan. 6, 2023

Online enrollment requests for spring semester original credit high school courses through the Innovative Pathways Evening Program are open through 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6. Enrollment requests may be submitted online through HCPSS Connect Synergy using the directions available online.

When the doors open to New High School #13 for students in August 2023, one of the first smiling faces students will see is that of Principal Josh Wasilewski, who by then will have been waiting an entire year to welcome his students into their new school.
