Wilde Lake HS’ Brandon Lauer Named Maryland Athletic Director of the Year

Wilde Lake High School Athletic and Activities Manager (AAM) Brandon Lauer has been named a Maryland State Athletic Director of the Year by the Maryland State Athletic Directors Association (MSADA). The award is presented to an athletic administrator who has significantly impacted students’ lives and used athletics to progress in the school and community’s social and cultural environments. Candidates must be MSADA members and have received the District Athletic Director of the Year Award within the past two years.

HCPSS Submits Blueprint Plan to the State

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) has submitted its initial draft of the Blueprint Local Implementation Plan to the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Accountability and Implementation Board (AIB). Community members are invited to review the current draft plan and submit feedback to HCPSS.

HCPSS Congratulates 76 National Board Certified Teachers

HCPSS recognizes 76 teachers who achieved certification in December 2022—22 first-time achievers and 54 who renewed their certification. National Board Certification (NBC) is the highest-level credential in the educational profession.
Dual Enrollment Gives Students a “JumpStart” on College

For students who plan to attend college—or even for students who are just thinking about it—HCPSS’ JumpStart Dual Enrollment program is a way to earn college credits while still in high school. JumpStart is a partnership between HCPSS and Howard Community College (HCC) that expands options for high school students to gain college credits, explore possible careers and even earn an associate degree.
Staff Focus: Amy Miller, School Social Worker, Homewood Center

Amy Miller is one of four licensed school social workers at HCPSS’ Homewood Center, where she serves as a leader of the school’s Bridges Program. In that capacity, Miller provides therapy to students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) who struggle with social and emotional challenges ranging from anxiety and depression to autism, mood disorders, and psychiatric conditions that affect their well-being and academic performance.
“Elevating Equity in Schools” Film Screening and Mini-Conference, March 17-18, 2023

HCPSS, in partnership with several Howard County organizations, will host two free events this month: a screening and discussion of the 2019 documentary “Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools” on Friday, March 17 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. at the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center and a mini-conference on Saturday, March 18 from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Long Reach High School.
Howard County Reports Record High Graduation Rate for Class of 2022

The HCPSS Class of 2022 achieved a graduation rate of 94.59%, a 1.81 percentage point increase from the Class of 2019. The HCPSS 2022 graduation rate exceeds the 2022 Maryland average of 86.3 percent and is the highest rate since 2011.
2023-2024 Kindergarten Registration Opens March 6, 2023
March 1st, 2023
Registration for the 2023-2024 school year begins March 6, 2023. Parents/guardians of children who will be five on or before September 1, 2023, must enroll their children in kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year.
