HCPSS Board of Education Honor 2023 Friends of Education Award Honorees

The Howard County Board of Education recognized Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Iota Lamba Omega Chapter with its prestigious Friends of Education Award during the 4 p.m. Board Meeting on April 13, 2023.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA), Iota Lambda Omega Chapter (ILO). Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. In 1972, Iota Lambda Omega Chapter was established in Howard County. One of AKA’s standards is to be “supreme in service to all mankind” and ILO’s motto is “Inspired to serve and empowered to lead”. As a result of these guiding principles the sorority has provided a broad range of service to eliminate food insecurities, strengthen families and support the learning and achievement of students in Howard County especially those who need additional resources to ensure student well-being and college and career readiness. Some of their services include career day speakers, after school tutors, reading academies, food pantries, scholarships, assistance for completing college applications, parent advocacy programs, community outreach activities, and youth summits.

The Board also acknowledged Friends of Education nominees Lisa Krausz, Clarksville Youth Care Group, Columbia MD Chapter Continental Societies and Howard County Sheriff’s Department for their contributions to the school system.

The Friends of Education Award was established in 2001 to salute exemplary volunteer contributions of time and talent that directly support academic achievement and safe learning environments for the Howard County Public School System
