Growing Friendships and Produce in the Caring Crops Community Garden

Last year, students from Centennial High School (CHS) approached the administration at the Applications and Research Lab (ARL) to discuss using the space next to the greenhouse to establish a Zero Hunger Hub garden. Once the space at ARL was identified, they had to determine where to donate the produce they’d grow and landed on the HCPSS Homewood Center, located on the same property. Throughout their first growing season in the fall, the Homewood Center’s food pantry received regular donations totaling 15 pounds of fresh produce. They already have planted vegetables for spring and summer growing and will continue to donate to Homewood as produce is harvested.
HCPSS Job Fairs, June and July 2023

HCPSS is hosting three summer job fairs which are open to any individuals who are interested in the several areas of employment. Registration is required to attend.
Families Must Register for Bus Service

Families whose children are eligible for bus transportation must register through HCPSS Connect Synergy to receive bus service for the 2023-2024 school year. The transportation registration process will help HCPSS more accurately account for the number of students who plan to use buses.
Centennial HS Student Transforms Class Assignment into a Published Novel

Centennial High School junior Nicole Cavey set out to write a 3,000-word short story for her Honors English class. With encouragement and guidance from CHS English teacher Rus VanWestervelt, her story has evolved into “The Realm Crashers and the Shadow King,” a 91,500-word novel for young adults that is currently available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other online booksellers.
HCPSS Students Advance to National History Day Competition

Twenty-one HCPSS students will advance to the National History Day Competition being held at the University of Maryland, College Park from June 11–15. The students advancing won first or second place at the statewide Maryland History Day Competition, held on May 6 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Faulkner Ridge Center Funding Will Expand HCPSS Pre-K Offerings

HCPSS will receive $22 million in one-time state pass-through grant funding from the Howard County Government to renovate the Faulkner Ridge Center, allowing the school system to expand universal Pre-K services for 3- and 4-year-olds within the County.
2023 Work Hard Be Kind Award Recipients

The HCPSS Work Hard Be Kind Award recognizes individuals who lead with kindness and go above and beyond to support the mission and vision of the system. One school-based staff member from each of the three Areas, along with one individual from Central Office was selected for a total of four awardees.
Howard HS Student Lamia Ayaz Elected 2023-2024 SMOB

Lamia Ayaz, a Howard High School junior, was elected Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) for the 2023-2024 school year. The election, open to all middle and high school students, was conducted by the Howard County Association of Student Councils (HCASC) on May 3.
