Howard HS Student Lamia Ayaz Elected 2023-2024 SMOB

Lamia Ayaz, a Howard High School junior, was elected Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) for the 2023-2024 school year. The election, open to all middle and high school students, was conducted by the Howard County Association of Student Councils (HCASC) on May 3.

Middle School G/T Debate Builds Skills and Community

More than 350 students, representing all 20 HCPSS middle schools, gathered earlier this year at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory for the Middle School Countywide Gifted and Talented Debate. The event was the culmination of students’ participation in HCPSS’ Gifted and Talented (G/T) Instructional Seminar, a year-long, non-graded elective in which students had the opportunity to research a topic (the district statehood), develop arguments both for and against it, and showcase their knowledge through a real-time, in-person debate against students from across the county.
Cedar Lane Horticulture Program to Host Plant Event, May 19-20, 2023

Students in Dallas Rosenthal’s horticulture classes at the Cedar Lane School (CLS) have been hard at work growing and organizing plants for the school’s first public plant event in several years. The event will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20 in front of the Cedar Lane School, 11630 Scaggsville Road, Fulton.
HCPSS Recognized as Best Community for Music Education for Eighth Consecutive Year

Howard County Public School System once again has been recognized as a Best Communities for Music Education Districts by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. The award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.
HCPSS Schools Honored as 2023 Maryland Green Schools

This year, two Howard County public schools, Patapsco Middle School and Worthington Elementary School, became newly certified as Maryland Green Schools, by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE).
HCPSS has a total of 42 schools participating in the Maryland Green Schools program.
Long Reach HS Wins National Contest to Debut Broadway’s “Frozen”

Audiences who attend Long Reach High School’s April 2023 production of Broadway’s Frozen are in for more than just entertainment. They’ll also be part of a new chapter in Frozen’s history, with LRHS having been selected as one of only 50 high schools in the nation with rights to produce the show.
Preparing High School Students for the World of Work

All 12 HCPSS high schools host a World of Work event each year, which aims to help students prepare for the interview process. Schools solicit local businesses and community members, and parents/guardians to interview students and provide feedback.
