HCPSS Superintendent Presents 2023-2024 Operating Budget Proposal
Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano presented his proposed operating budget for the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) fiscal year 2023–2024 (FY 2024) during a presentation to the Board of Education on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.
Proposed HCPSS Instructional Materials on Display through January 12, 2023
Newly recommended instructional materials for the 2023-2024 school year will be on display for review in the lobby of the Department of Education at 10910 Clarksville Pike in Ellicott City, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. from December 17, 2022 through January 12, 2023, excluding December 26, 27, and 30, 2022, as well as January 2, 2023.
Board of Education to Hold Coffee & Conversation Jan. 7, 2023
The next Board of Education Coffee & Conversation is scheduled for Jan. 7 at Mayfield Woods Middle School (7950 Red Barn Way, Elkridge, MD 21075) from 9:30-11 a.m. The event will be in person.
Blessings in a Backpack Program Provides Weekend Food for Thunder Hill Elementary School Students
Thunder Hill Elementary School (THES) has partnered with Blessings in a Backpack and the Howard County Sheriff’s Office to begin a weekend food program for THES students. Launched in October, the program is providing packs of non-perishable weekend snack foods for 125 students. The program provides food packs to students every Friday during the school year at no cost to families.
Howard County Board of Education Finalizes Redistricting Process to Open New High School #13
On November 17, 2022, the Board of Education finalized its Attendance Area Adjustment Plan related to the redistricting process to open New High School #13. Additionally, the Board voted to exempt several student groups from the redistricting decision, allowing them the option of remaining at their current school or attending the newly assigned school.
HCPSS Students Participating in JumpStart Dual Enrollment Courses to Receive Free Tuition
HCPSS and Howard Community College announced that eligible students who participate in JumpStart dual enrollment courses, including those who are currently enrolled, will no longer be charged the cost of tuition.
Board Approves FY 2024 Capital Budget Proposal
The Howard County Board of Education approved its Capital Budget Request for fiscal year (FY) 2024, FY 2025–2029 Capital Improvement Program, and FY 2024–2033 Long-Range Master Plan, following a public work session on Thursday, September 29, 2022.
HCPSS Announces FY 2022 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), Annual Audit Completion and Elimination of the Historic Health and Dental Fund Deficit
HCPSS has received an unmodified opinion from its external auditor, CohnReznick LLP, which is included in the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for fiscal year (FY) 2022. The unmodified opinion signifies that the HCPSS financial statements are presented fairly and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. More significantly, the FY 2022 audit and ACFR represent an important milestone reflecting HCPSS’ steadfast focus on improving the financial management of the school system through the elimination of the historical deficit in the HCPSS Health and Dental Fund, reporting a fund balance of $5.95 million.
HCPSS Seeks Members for Health and Physical Education Curriculum Advisory Committees
HCPSS is currently seeking members to participate on its Health and Physical Education Curriculum Advisory Committees. Committee members will share ideas, distribute information, and advise the HCPSS Office of Health and Physical Education on the selection of new instructional materials in accordance with Policy 8040 – Selection of Instructional Materials.
