Schools, Offices to Close for Special Primary Election on February 4, 2020

All Howard County Public School System schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, due to the special election primary to fill the 7th congressional district seat vacated following the passing of Rep. Elijah Cummings.

Board Takes Action on Attendance Area Adjustments for 2020–2021 School Year

The Howard County Board of Education voted to revise HCPSS school attendance areas for the 2020–2021 school year. The decision to adjust school boundaries was prompted by the need to relieve crowded schools, more effectively balance capacity utilization among schools throughout the district, and address inequities in the distribution of students affected by poverty.

HCPSS Seeks Additional Members for Science Advisory Committee By December 13, 2019

Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is currently seeking Howard County residents with a background in the physical sciences or engineering to participate on the Science Advisory Committee. Interested candidates should submit an online application by Friday, December 13, 2019.

Board Takes Action to Reduce Health Fund Deficit

The Howard County Board of Education has approved a funds transfer to significantly reduce the cumulative deficit in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) employee Health and Dental Fund. Subject to County Council approval, the decision will immediately transfer $15.2 million of the unassigned General Fund balance to reduce the current $39.2 million deficit to $24.0 million.

Clarksville Middle Named 2019 National Blue Ribbon School

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recognized Clarksville Middle School as one of 362 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2019. Clarksville Middle was selected for the Exemplary High Performing Schools category, which honors the state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

Board Considers Two 2020-2021 School Calendar Proposals

The Howard County Board of Education is considering two options for the 2020-2021 academic calendar. Both options, which were presented at the September 19, 2019 Board meeting, reflect recommendations by the Academic Calendar Planning Committee and additional recommendations from Superintendent Michael J. Martirano.

HCPSS Seeks Citizen Member for Policy 8100 Field Trips, Due September 20, 2019

HCPSS is currently seeking a general citizen candidate for membership on the revision committee for Policy 8100, Field Trips. The selected citizen will be contacted by October 7, 2019 with tentative committee meeting dates.
