The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is seeking community members to join the Howard County School Health Council. The first Council meeting for the 2023-2024 School Year will be September 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Howard County Public School Students’ performance in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics achievement continues to improve, as reflected in 2023 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) scores released by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

HCPSS Provides Certificated Staff Hiring Update Ahead of School Year Start
The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is readying for the start of the school year and is continuing the hiring process to fill remaining certificated staff vacancies. The system currently has only 53 certificated staff vacancies, resulting in a current fill rate of 99%. At a similar time last year, HCPSS had approximately 25% more certificated vacancies.
HCPSS, Bright Minds Foundation and Prepare for Success Join WBAL’s Stuff the Bus Event
The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), Bright Minds Foundation and Prepare for Success joined WBAL for their annual Stuff the Bus event on August 17, 2023, which collects school supply donations for Howard County students. The event was held at Walmart in Ellicott City.
HCPSS Superintendent Receives Two Awards
Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) Superintendent, Michael J. Martirano, Ed. D was recently honored with two special awards. The first award is the 2023 Outstanding Alumni Award given by the University of Maryland’s College of Education Alumni. The second was the Tom Cookerly Exceptional School Superintendent Leadership Award, given to Dr. Martirano by the the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF).
HCPSS Reaches Agreement with Local Transportation Contractors
The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) has reached an agreement with local transportation contractors to continue providing bus service to HCPSS. This agreement is an amicable resolution of the respective concerns about the contract issues raised in the contractors’ withdrawn lawsuit and allows all parties to move forward in support of our joint mission of meeting the transportation needs of Howard County’s students.

New Guilford Park High School Opens
Hundreds of Howard County students, families, staff, community members and special guests attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, to celebrate the opening of Howard County’s newest high school, Guilford Park High School (GPHS), located at 8500 Ridgely’s Run Road, Jessup, Md.
