Board Schedules Closed Session and Reschedules Work Session, June 10; Postpones Budget Adoption

The Howard County Board of Education has scheduled a closed meeting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2020. The Budget Work Session, previously scheduled for 9 a.m., is rescheduled to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10. The Board has postponed adoption of the FY21 Operating and Capital Budget and FY22-26 Capital Improvement Program, previously scheduled at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, to a future date to be announced.

Board to Meet in Closed Session, June 9

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a Closed Meeting on Tuesday, June 9 at 12 p.m. The meeting will be held virtually.

The Howard County Board of Education will hold FY21 Operating & Capital Budget Work Sessions Tuesday, June 9 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and 4:30-5:30 p.m., and Wednesday, June 10 at 9 a.m. All meetings will be held virtually.

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a Closed Meeting on Monday, June 8 at 4 p.m., and FY21 Operating & Capital Budget Work Sessions on Tuesday, June 9 at noon and 4 p.m., and Wednesday, June 10 at 9 a.m. All meetings will be held virtually.

Board of Education Postpones FY21 Budget Approval to June 11, 2020; Schedules Virtual Closed Session, May 28, 2020

The Howard County Board of Education has postponed adoption of the FY21 Operating and Capital Budget and FY22-26 Capital Improvement Program, previously scheduled on May 28, to Thursday, June 11 at 3 p.m.

HCPSS Students and Teachers Recognized in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

Atholton High School senior Bill Tong and Centennial High School senior Nadine Meister have been named as U.S. Presidential Scholars by the U.S. Department of Education. There were a total of 161 students selected nationally as Class of 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholars.

Access to Learning Fund Donations to Be Matched

Bright Minds Foundation and HCPSS announce a new matching donation opportunity for the emergency Access to Learning Fund, which is raising money for education access supports for HCPSS students during the coronavirus school closure. As of May 1, 2020, donations received will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $15,000, thanks to The Kahlert Foundation.

HCPSS Environmental Educator at Howard County Conservancy Wins U.S. EPA Award

Ann Strozyk, HCPSS environmental educator at the Howard County Conservancy, was recently recognized as the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators winner for Region 3. Strozyk is one of seven winners of this national award, presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in partnership with the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

2020-21 SMOB Election to be Held Online June 2-3, 2020

The Howard County Association of Student Councils (HCASC) will hold its general election for the 2020-21 Student Member of the Board online June 2-3. All 6th-11th grade HCPSS students are eligible to vote in this year’s SMOB election.

HCPSS Names 2020 Principal and Teachers of the Year

Nancy Thompson of Talbott Springs Elementary School was named 2020 Howard County Principal of the Year and a Washington Post Principal of the Year nominee. Jerome Pickens of Bryant Woods Elementary School was named Howard County’s 2020 Maryland Teacher of the Year candidate, and Suzan Young of Homewood Center was selected as a 2020 Washington Post Teacher of the Year nominee.
