Board Approves FY 2023 Capital Budget Request

The Howard County Board of Education approved its Capital Budget Request for the July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023 fiscal year (FY 2023) and Priority Listing of FY 2023 State Capital Budget Request. The Board’s FY 2023 Capital Budget Request totals $99.5 million. Major items included in the FY 2023 capital budget request include costs for New High School #13, scheduled to open in September 2023; a renovation and addition at Hammond High School, scheduled for completion in September 2023; systemic renovations and ongoing systemic line items; and ongoing project lines to address various needs of the school system such as relocatable classrooms, roof projects, and planning and design.

HCPSS STARTALK Chinese Language After-School Virtual Program

The HCPSS STARTALK Pilot Chinese Language After-School Program offers a free, 15-week immersion program for current 7th and 8th grade students interested in learning the language and culture of China. Enrollment will be handled through a lottery system because space in the program is limited. To enter a child/children in the enrollment lottery process, parents/guardians must submit an enrollment request via HCPSS Connect

Instructional Supports During Quarantine and Health/Safety Updates, Sept. 24, 2021

Beginning the week of September 27, the HCPSS Evening School program will offer virtual grade-level academic support sessions for eligible elementary and middle school students who must quarantine or who are struggling academically. Schools will contact the families of students designated as eligible to participate. Parents also may request that their child participate by contacting the school principal.

Through a new partnership, Mt. Hebron High School football players are building relationships with Waverly Elementary School students, providing academic support as well as mentorship.

SpeakUp HoCo! Events, 2021-2022

SpeakUp HoCo! invites high school students to “talk about what matters to you”, including discussions on how to create relationships and thriving communities across cultural and racial divisions. Participants practice dialogue and facilitation skills, make podcasts, take part in trainings and more.

Health and Safety Updates and Reminders, Sept. 17, 2021

Health and safety updates and reminders include information on instructional supports during quarantine, daily health checks, the HCPSS COVID-19 dashboard, in-school COVID testing, and the staff vaccination/testing program.

Winter Clothing Drives Benefit HCPSS Students

HCPSS partners Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the MultiService Center are sponsoring winter clothing drives this fall. Donations are currently being accepted at the dates and locations below. Any family in need may pick up donated items, with no registration or proof of need required. The coat drives benefit families served by the HCPSS Pupil Personnel Services office.

Update on Installation of HEPA Filters and Outdoor Tents, Sept. 15, 2021

HCPSS is acquiring and installing HEPA air filter units in all classrooms, and tents to increase outdoor dining spaces at all elementary schools. Vendor delivery of all tents is expected by September 24, 2021 and will be installed as soon as possible at elementary schools in order of their school capacity utilization, beginning with the most densely populated schools.
