Student Member of the Board Selected to Represent Maryland in Senate Youth Program

Howard County Public School System Student Member of the Board Peter Banyas has been selected to represent Maryland during the 60th annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) Washington Week, to be held March 6-9. Banyas, a Howard High School senior, is one of only two high school students selected to serve as a Maryland delegate, joining the national student delegation.

HCPSS Staff to Receive $1,800 Public Employee Commitment Bonus

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball and the Howard County Public School System today announced that all full-time HCPSS employees will receive a $1,800 Public Education Commitment Bonus this school year, among the highest bonuses in the State. Bonuses will be prorated for part-time employees.

Howard County Public School System Increases Substitute Pay By 25 Percent

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is implementing a 25% increase to the daily rate for substitute teachers, as approved by the Board of Education. This increase, which takes effect January 13, 2022, will be funded as part of the Howard County Public School System’s (HCPSS) FY22 Operating Budget. High demand for substitute teachers exists throughout Maryland. The new pay increase places HCPSS among the highest paying districts in the state for substitute teachers, helping to attract top candidates to the position.

2022 Summer Programs Preview Available Online

Parents/guardians and students can now view/download the 2022 Summer Programs Preview, which includes descriptions of HCPSS’ four summer programs and enrollment information. The Preview can be found on the HCPSS Summer Programs webpage. Hard copies of the Preview will be distributed to the youngest or only student in the household at the end of January.

Running Brook Partnership Provides Diverse Books to Build Home Libraries, Inspire Reading

Thanks to a partnership with Always Reading, a Maryland-based nonprofit that works with Title I schools, Running Brook Elementary School (RBES) students not only have access to a steady stream of new books featuring diverse characters, stories, and perspectives; they also get to keep them.
