Behind the Scenes with HCPSS’ All-County Improv Troupe

All-County Improv is open to all Howard County high school students who have been recommended by their Theatre teachers. Auditions for the group are typically held in May, and rehearsals are held weekly for the first half of the year and twice per month in the second semester. Most years, ACI hosts a Winter Show and one to two smaller shows in the spring.

Behind the Scenes with HCPSS School Counselors

From custodians and nurses to teachers and administrators, HCPSS students have a wide range of school-based staff available to support them and help address their needs. School counselors are a critical part of that support team, helping students navigate everything from peer relationships and academic challenges to the college application process.

Staff Focus: Diane Moe, School Counselor, Jeffers Hill Elementary School

Diane Moe has been a counselor at Jeffers Hill Elementary School since 1999. In that time, she has helped countless students by providing academic, social, and emotional support.

Community Advisory Council Seeks New Executive Committee Members by Feb. 18, 2022

The Board of Education’s Community Advisory Council (CAC) announces an open call for leadership volunteers to serve on the Executive Committee for the 2022-2023 school year. Nominations are being accepted for Chair, 1st Vice Chair, 2nd Vice Chair, Secretary, and Policy Committee Chair. The CAC serves as liaison between the Board and the community at large, meets monthly during the school year, and reports directly to the Board. The Executive Committee receives from the community concerns, information, and inquiries about matters within the province of the Board and researches issues as appropriate.

HCPSS Student All-County Improv: An Evening of Comedy, Feb. 8, 2022

The public is invited to attend a night of improv comedy featuring HCPSS high school students. There is a $5 suggested donation.

Career Academy Info Session, March 2, 2022

Current 8-11 grade students and their parents/guardians are invited to attend virtual information sessions on HCPSS career academies on Wednesday, March 2. The evening will include two 20-minute information sessions, beginning at 7 and 7:30 p.m.

G/T Advisory Seeks Nominations for Educator Recognition by March 4, 2022

The annual HCPSS Educator Recognition Program sponsored by the Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee (GTAC) celebrates educators who demonstrate exemplary commitment to the needs of advanced-level learners and/or the Howard County G/T Education Program. Now through March 4, families and students have the opportunity to recognize a G/T Resource Teacher, content or classroom teacher, or administrator who has enriched the educational experience of advanced-level learners. ALL educators for whom submissions are received will be recognized.

2021-2022 Academic Calendar Updates, Jan.28, 2022

At its Jan. 27 meeting, the Howard County Board of Education approved several modifications to the 2021-2022 current school year academic calendar.

Story Walk: Inspiring Reading at Triadelphia Ridge Elementary School

This fall, Triadelphia Ridge Elementary School media specialist Laura Spangler decided to try a new way to engage her students and inspire them to read. Working with HCPSS’ Print Services team, she produced a series of panels featuring the text and illustrations from Kenard Pak’s children’s book “Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn” and placed them in a small garden area at the front of the school. The experience – known as a “StoryWalk” – gave students an enjoyable new way to relate to a story.

At-Home COVID-19 Test Kit Distribution

During the week of Feb. 7, HCPSS will be distributing one at-home COVID-19 rapid test kit to every student and staff member. Each test kit contains two tests and is intended to support diagnostic testing at home when students or staff are experiencing COVID-like symptoms.
