Therapy Dogs Bring Joy to All at Cedar Lane

Throughout the school year, students and staff at the Cedar Lane School (CLS) are visited by volunteers and dogs from Fidos for Freedom, a nonprofit, volunteer-based organization that provides service dogs, hearing dogs and therapy dogs to people with a host of different needs. The visits enable CLS students to practice communication, mobility, and social interaction skills and provide a source of joy to students, staff, and Fidos volunteers alike.

Community Building Night, Jan. 11, 2024

HCPSS’ Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Howard County Library System (HCLS) will host a community building night on Thursday, Jan. 11 from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at the HCLS East Columbia Branch (6600 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, MD 21045).

“Girl Power” Program Builds Confidence, Friendships, and More

“Girl Power” is a mentoring program for elementary-age female students. Created by WKD Karate 4 Girls (WKDK4G) owner Monique Washington-Jones, the program teaches life skills like self-confidence, gratitude, relationship-building, and more.

Proposed HCPSS Instructional Materials on Display Through January 12, 2024

Newly recommended instructional materials for the 2024-2025 school year will be on display for review in the lobby of the Department of Education at 10910 Clarksville Pike in Ellicott City, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. from December 20, 2023, through January 12, 2024, excluding December 25-30, 2023, as well as January 2, 2024.

HCPSS is currently seeking candidates for membership on the following SY23-24 Policy Advisory Committee: Policy 5200 Student Transportation.

First Year of New State Star Ratings for HCPSS Schools

The Maryland State Department of Education released Maryland Report Card data for each Howard County school. The State’s online Maryland Report Card, which also includes star ratings for each school based on the data, includes several primary differences in the most recent ratings from recent years. Notably, the report card is now returning to pre-pandemic chronic absenteeism calculations, a new academic progress measure for the middle school social studies assessment, and updated growth calculations for English language arts and mathematics assessments for elementary and middle school.

Centennial HS Athletics and Activities Manager Wins State Athletics Administration Award

Centennial High School (CHS) Athletics and Activities Manager (AAM) Jeannie Provosto has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association State Award of Merit for Maryland. Prevosto was selected on the basis of her membership in professional associations and her outstanding service in interscholastic athletics at both the local and state levels.
