Howard County Board of Education Names Interim Superintendent

May 18th, 2017

The Howard County Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Michael J. Martirano, Ed.D. as interim superintendent of the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) tonight during its regular monthly meeting.

See Dr. Martirano’s contract here.

“The Board appreciates Dr. Martirano’s willingness to serve as a stabilizing leader for the school system as we are in the process of selecting our next superintendent of schools,” said Board of Education Chairman Cynthia Vaillancourt. “We have a school system our community can be proud of and the Board wants to be deliberate about selecting a leader who can take us further in ways that provide equity and opportunity for students.”

Dr. Martirano becomes interim superintendent for one year, effective July 1, 2017, contingent upon the successful conclusion of contract negotiations and the approval of the state superintendent. He was named acting superintendent on May 2.

“It is a privilege for me to serve Howard County public schools and the community in the capacity of interim superintendent,” Dr. Martirano said. “As the Board continues its work, my focus is on a successful conclusion to this school year and preparing for next school year in ways that strengthen education for all children.”

The Board of Education will soon begin discussions about the process and timeline for finding a permanent superintendent. Community meetings will be announced at a later date as part of that process.
