HCPSS School Closure Daily Update: March 13, 2020

HCPSS is continuing preparations for the period when schools will be closed, from 6 p.m. Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 29. The following daily update provides additional details for families and staff.

2020 Battle of the Books Canceled

March 13th, 2020

Due to the recommendations from Governor Hogan to practice social distancing and cancel large events, the 2020 Battle of the Books is canceled.

March School Closures Information and Important Resources

We have further reviewed the decision made by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Salmon to close Maryland public schools March 16–27, and would like to share additional information and resources for staff and families.

State Superintendent Closes MD Schools for Two Weeks, Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020

March 12th, 2020

Governor Larry Hogan and State Superintendent Dr. Karen Salmon directed that all Maryland schools close in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Accordingly, all HCPSS schools and office buildings will be closed Friday, March 13 at 6 p.m. through Sunday, March 29.

March 12 Board of Education Meeting Postponed to 6 p.m.

March 12th, 2020

The Howard County Board of Education Meeting, originally scheduled for 3 p.m. today, Thursday, March 12, has been rescheduled to begin at 6 p.m, and with a limited agenda. The Public Hearing on Policy 4030, School Activity Funds will be rescheduled to a later date.

HCPSS Cancels All Out-of-State Field Trips, In-State Field Trips Being Reassessed

Howard County Public School System Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano on March 10, 2020 announced that all out-of-state field trips and athletic events, including those to Washington, D.C., are canceled effective immediately due to concerns related to COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Message from the Superintendent: Coronavirus Preparedness Information and Resources

As the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID–19) becomes more prevalent in the United States and now in Maryland, Howard County residents are understandably seeking assurances from local leaders that they are prepared for every conceivable possibility and everything possible is being done to protect the residents in our county. Please know that HCPSS staff are dedicating significant efforts to collaborating with local, state and federal agencies to provide the most accurate information and informed guidance to residents and leaders in the county as possible.

Talk With Me Celebrates a Successful First Year

In its first year of implementation, Talk With Me • Howard County staff and volunteers have spread the word about the brain-building power of positive early interactions to more than 300 parents and almost 100 childcare providers, agency staff and community members in Howard County.

Staff Focus: Diane Curry, English Teacher and JumpStart Lead Teacher, River Hill High School

Diane Curry has spent much of her career promoting literacy, most recently as an English teacher and lead JumpStart teacher at River Hill High School.

Message from the Superintendent Regarding Confirmed Coronavirus Cases in Maryland

Governor Hogan announced this evening that three cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) have been confirmed in Maryland. All three cases are located in Montgomery County and are contained. HCPSS schools and scheduled activities will continue until a change is deemed necessary by local and state health professionals.
