Board of Education Feb. 2 Budget Public Hearing Rescheduled to 5 p.m.

The Howard County Board of Education Public Hearing on the Superintendent’s FY2022 Budget Proposal, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2, is rescheduled to 5 p.m. today, due to inclement weather.

HCPSS Seeks Members for LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee

HCPSS is currently seeking members to participate on a new LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee. Community members of all sexual orientations and gender identities who have an interest in supporting LGBTQIA+ HCPSS students are encouraged to apply for participation.

HCPSS Seeks Members for Policy Advisory Committee

HCPSS is currently seeking candidates for membership on the 2020-2021 Policy Advisory Committee for Policy 4070 Fund Balance/Policy 4100 Investment. This committee will include one member representing the general resident stakeholder group. Members of this committee will discuss and make policy recommendations to the Superintendent.

Board of Education to Hold Virtual Work Sessions on School Reopening, January 25 and 26

The Howard County Board of Education will hold virtual Work Sessions on Reopening at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 25, and at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2021. The meetings will be televised and streamed live on www.hcpss.org.

HCPSS, HCC Achieve Top Tier State Ranking for Dual Enrollment Participation

Student participation in dual enrollment courses (known as JumpStart) offered in collaboration between the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) and Howard Community College (HCC) has increased to 1,798 students, giving Howard County the distinction of the second-highest ranking among Maryland counties. Students enrolled in more than 2,800 courses for college credit during the fall 2020 semester.

HCPSS Board Secures Pro Bono Legal Counsel for SMOB Lawsuit

The Howard County Board of Education recently secured the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection (ICAP) to provide pro bono legal services in the recent lawsuit seeking to eliminate the voting rights of the Howard County Student Member of the Board of Education.

HCPSS Seeks Members for Business Management Advisory Committee

Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is currently seeking members to participate on a new Business Management Academy Program Advisory Committee. Community members or representatives of local organizations who have a background or interest in finance, advertising, marketing, human resources, banking/investing, or economics are encouraged to apply for participation.

Board Approves 2021-2022 Academic Calendar

The Howard County Board of Education approved the 2021-2022 academic calendar during its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, January 7, 2021. The next school year will begin on August 30, 2021, for students and on August 19, 2021, for school staff. Winter break will be December 23-31, 2021 with schools reopening on Monday, January 3, 2022. Spring Break will run from April 11-18, 2022. The last day of school is scheduled for June 14, 2022.

HCPSS Partner Jemicy School to Share Dyslexia and Language-Based Learning Differences Expertise

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) has partnered with the Jemicy School to increase staff understanding of the science of reading and dyslexia, as well as the appropriate strategies so that all students develop academic skills and a love of learning. Under the terms of the agreement, the HCPSS Elementary Language Arts Office will collaborate with Jemicy to offer professional learning and training for HCPSS staff focused on understanding dyslexia.

Nominations for Friends of Education Award Accepted Through February 8, 2021

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2021 Friends of Education Award. The award was established by the Howard County Board of Education to recognize and show appreciation to those individuals, businesses, non-profit groups, organizations, or associations who have made exemplary contributions to Howard County public education and to increase awareness of the importance of community involvement to the achievement of the school system’s Strategic Call to Action plan.
