HCPSS Board Secures Pro Bono Legal Counsel for SMOB Lawsuit

The Howard County Board of Education recently secured the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection (ICAP) to provide pro bono legal services in the recent lawsuit seeking to eliminate the voting rights of the Howard County Student Member of the Board of Education.

“We are grateful to the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection for approaching us and offering this pro bono work on behalf of the Board and the voting rights of the student member,” said Board Chair Chao Wu. “The Board feels strongly about the important voice of the student member and are pleased that we are able to respond to the lawsuit without additional burden to Howard County taxpayers.”

The Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection is a non-profit law firm based at Georgetown Law. The Institute is made up of a team of experienced attorneys formerly with the United States Department of Justice, and routinely represents government entities, including local governments, in high-stakes litigation in both state and federal court. Some of its recent governmental clients include the U.S. House of Representatives; the City of Charlottesville, Va.; and the City of Gary, Ind.; among others.
