Apprenticeship Maryland Academy Info Session, May 5, 2022
Current 11th grade students and their parents/guardians are invited to attend an in-person information session on the HCPSS Apprenticeship Maryland Academy, Thursday, May 5 at 6 p.m. The event will be held at the HCPSS Applications and Research Laboratory, 10920 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City.
Wilde Lake HS Student’s Mentorship Program Promotes Educational Equity
Expanding on Wilde Lake High School’s Rise Up Scheduling and Summer Workshop initiatives, WLHS senior Emmanuella Osei has helped create Rise Up, a schoolwide program that pairs WLHS students with experience in rigorous courses with Black and Brown WLHS students who are “rising up” to an advanced course or who need support in their advanced courses.
Jazz in the Woods Festival, April 30, 2022
The Howard County Public School System Fine Arts Office, in partnership with The Inner Arbor Trust, invites the community to attend the third annual Jazz in the Woods Festival. The musical celebration will take place at the Chrysalis-Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods. Tickets are free and the event is open to the public.

From April 1 through April 20, Long Reach High School ran 20for20, a school cleanup project dedicated to improving the local environment and fostering a shared sense of environmental stewardship.
Student-Led SMOB Convention Success Reflects Keen Organization and Student Engagement
Held via Zoom on March 22, this year’s Student Member of the Board (SMOB) convention brought together more than 130 student delegates from middle and high schools across the county to get to know nine students who had applied to be SMOB for the 2022-23 school year. The two final SMOB candidates —Abisola Ayoola and Oliver Song, both from Wilde Lake High School—were chosen at the convention and will face off in an election on May 4.
HCPSS Again Recognized as a Best Community for Music Education
The Howard County Public School System has been recognized as one of the 2022 Best Communities for Music Education Districts by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. The award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education.
HCPSS Schools Honored as 2022 Maryland Green Schools
Howard High School was certified this year as a Maryland Green School by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE). Eleven Howard County public schools have recertified as Maryland Green Schools.
Front Office Staff Provide Essential Support to Staff, Students, and Families
HCPSS’ front office staff are the first people you see when you walk into a school building. They are the ones who most often answer the phones; monitor and allow parents, guardians and visitors into the building; relay lunches or other items to students who forgot them; and so much more. They are integral to schools’ day-to-day operations, providing support to teachers, students, and administrators alike.
HCPSS Students Named 2022 Carson Scholars
Thirty-two HCPSS students in grades 4-11, who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and humanitarianism, have been recognized as 2022 Carson Scholars.
HCPSS and HCEA Ratify 2022-2023 Master Agreement
The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) and Howard County Education Association (HCEA) ratified their master agreement for the 2022-2023 school year at the Board of Education meeting on April 7, 2022. HCEA represents certificated and ESP (Educational Support Professionals) employees who serve the system in a non-supervisory role.
