HCPSS Students Named 2024 Carson Scholars
Thirty-one HCPSS students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and dedication to serving their communities have been recognized as 2024 Carson Scholars, including eight students who were named first-time Scholars.
Glenwood MS Principal Named Maryland’s First Middle School National Distinguished Principal
Glenwood Middle School Principal Melissa Shindel has been named Maryland’s National Distinguished Principal at the middle school level by the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP). Shindel is the first middle school principal in Maryland to win this award, which has historically only been given to elementary school principals.
Mayfield Woods MS Math Teacher Selected as a Presidential Award Finalist
Mayfield Woods Middle School (MWMS) mathematics teacher Norah Storey MacPhee has been selected as a finalist for the Presidential Awards in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for K-6th grade by the Maryland State Department of Education. MacPhee is one of six finalists in the state—and one of three in mathematics—who will compete at the national level.

Nine HCPSS Pre-K Programs Achieve State Accreditation During 2023-24 School Year
Nine HCPSS full-day prekindergarten programs achieved Maryland Accreditation during the 2023-2024 school year. Another cohort of HCPSS pre-K programs is currently pursuing Accreditation. All HCPSS pre-K programs are expected to achieve Accreditation by the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
Two HCPSS Students Compete to Become the Next Student Member of the Board
Wilde Lake High School junior Antonio Clay-Hardy and Atholton High School junior James Obasiolu will face each other to be the next Student Member of the Board of Education.
Countywide Festival Brings Students and Staff Together to Explore Gospel Music
This year, HCPSS’ Terry Eberhardt and his colleagues organized the first-ever HCPSS Gospel Music Festival. Held in February, the event brought together interested students in 8th-12th grade and staff from across the county to learn about and perform gospel music.
