HCPSS Hazardous Weather Outlook Information – Outdoor Games and Practices Canceled Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023

September 4th, 2023

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook as temperatures are expected to be in the mid to upper 90s. There are several considerations and pieces of information families should know when temperatures become elevated.

Afterschool Athletics

All outdoor athletics contests and practices are canceled for Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023.

Athletics and Activities Managers and coaches will communicate with teams if activities are able to be brought indoors. More information for the remainder of the week will be provided in a community message sent Tuesday.

An earlier email related to transportation provided adjusted start times for athletic contests this week. We anticipate that those will take effect beginning Wednesday, Sept. 5, unless further adjustments to the athletics schedule must be made. Additional information will be provided to the community tomorrow related to Wednesday contests.

Air Conditioning in Schools

All HCPSS schools have working air conditioning to ensure internal temperatures in the school are comfortable and conducive to teaching and learning. If issues arise that impact indoor air temperature and require HVAC maintenance, efforts will be made to repair those units quickly and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Recess and PE

Outdoor recess and PE are being planned for this week, but teachers and staff are planning for less strenuous activities during PE and more opportunities for water breaks. Students will be permitted to carry water bottles with them during PE, recess and throughout the day. Students with breathing issues such as asthma or chronic lung issues should take necessary precautions including rest breaks and refer to the school nurse for assistance if needed.

Outdoor Eating

Outdoor eating spaces will continue to be offered if students would like to use the tents and other areas to enjoy lunch outside. This will remain optional, and principals will use their discretion.

Walking/Biking to School

Students who walk or bike to school are encouraged to carry water with them and sip it throughout the duration of their commute. They will have an opportunity to refill water bottles upon arriving at school and prior to dismissal.

Water Fountains and Refill Stations

All schools are equipped with water fountains and water bottle refill stations, and students are encouraged to use those as needed. Grace will be given to students who walked or rode their bike to school to access water and for students who are participating in outdoor activities during and after school.

If any students are feeling physical distress from heat during the school day, they should inform a supervising adult and see the school nurse immediately. Staff will monitor students to be sure everyone remains healthy during this unseasonably warm weather.
