The Howard County Public School System Office of Student Transportation shared the updates below on transportation and start times for the 2023-2024 school year at the Board of Education meeting held on Thursday, June 22.
School Start Times: Reiterating what was shared recently, families may locate their school’s start time online. If any changes are made to the start time, it will vary by no more than 10 minutes of the time listed. Any changes to school start times will be finalized and communicated to families by mid-July. This allows families to plan accordingly until times are finalized for each school next month.
Combination Bussing: The use of combination bussing (having students from multiple school levels ride the same bus at the same time) will not need to occur this school year. This was being considered to help alleviate the impacts of the bus driver shortage. As a result, elementary school students will ride with elementary school students, middle school students with middle school students, and high school students with high school students.
Transportation Registration: HCPSS asked all eligible families to register for transportation for the 2023-2024 school year. Registration is now closed and over 95% of eligible families responded. To streamline bus route planning, the Office of Student Transportation will assume that the eligible students who did not register will require bus service and will include them in planning bus routes accordingly.
Bus Driver Hiring: HCPSS bus contractors have been working diligently to find and hire drivers to fill all necessary routes. If families know of anyone who is interested in filling a bus driver vacancy, please contact the Office of Student Transportation at 410-313-6732.
School Drop-off/Pickup Procedures: School administrators have been working to assess their bus and car drop-off and pickup processes at their school to ensure traffic will flow as efficiently as possible during school arrival and dismissal. Be on the lookout for communication from your school as the start of the year approaches in the event your school’s drop-off and pickup procedures will change.
2023-2024 School Year Resources: HCPSS provides online resources for families so they can prepare for the 2023-2024 school year. The webpage currently contains information on start times and transportation and will be continually updated as the school year approaches.
