Prepping for the 2023-2024 School Year: School Start Times and Transportation, June 21, 2023

The Howard County Public School System wants to ensure families are prepared for the start of the 2023–2024 school year. This message will be the first in a series this summer meant to help keep families informed about the school year, particularly as we implement new start times and transportation procedures.

School Start Times

Start times for the 2023–2024 school year are based on the times adopted by the Board of Education in February 2023. These times are not completely finalized at this point, however if there are changes to the times listed online, it will be by no more than 10 minutes. Any changes to start times will be updated online and all final start times will be distributed to families prior to the start of the school year.

Transportation Updates

Students Who Receive Bus Transportation

Bus routes for the 2023–2024 school year are being finalized and will be shared with families prior to the start of the school year.

Students in Non-Transportation Areas

In the coming weeks, HCPSS will share information and tips with students and families who are in non-transportation areas, including safety tips and how to utilize the Howard County RTA buses where applicable. All middle and high school students are eligible for free RTA passes during the school year.

Families are encouraged to map out and walk the route between home and school this summer to ensure all roads, sidewalks and pathways are familiar to students prior to the start of the school year. Locate all crosswalks and intersections that are safe for crossing the road if that is required and go over these pedestrian tips with your student. If you encounter issues of safety, please contact the HCPSS Office of Student Transportation to make HCPSS staff aware.
