HCPSS Named a 2020 Best Employer for Diversity by Forbes

January 21st, 2020

For the second year in a row, the Howard County Public School System was named one of America’s Best Employers for Diversity for 2020 by Forbes magazine. HCPSS is No. 168 overall on the national list of 500 employers.

“I’m proud that the Howard County Public School System has once again been recognized by Forbes as a top employer for diversity,” said Superintendent Michael J. Martirano. “This highlights the work we do every day to fulfill our Strategic Call to Action, to create inclusive school climates for all students and staff, and to offer every child equitable opportunities to learn, grow and achieve.”

HCPSS has embedded equity into every major undertaking, including the completion of the largest redistricting process in Howard County’s history, advancement of the proposed Capital and Operating budgets, and plan for elimination of the Health Fund Deficit. These four areas are intrinsically linked and augmented by current initiatives in restorative practices, supporting children and families struggling with poverty, mental illness and other needs, and more.

“Congratulations to our entire HCPSS staff and community on this national recognition of our ongoing efforts to build inclusive and nurturing learning environments,” said Mavis Ellis, Chair of the Howard County Board of Education. “This recognition is a wonderful affirmation that we are moving forward in embracing diversity and building healthy school relationships.”

HCPSS priorities include: building a program to foster inclusive learning and work environments; institutionalizing diversity and inclusion work into the curriculum and culture; commiting to equitable discipline practices, leveraging partners such as county government and community organizations; and providing staff with professional development on cultural proficiency.

Howard County is working to employ a staff that reflects the diversity of its community and providing competitive salaries to attract a talented and diverse workforce. At the same time, the system has put a strong emphasis on celebrating staff, with a robust staff recognition program.

The Best Employers for Diversity 2020 were chosen based on an independent survey from a representative sample of 60,000 employees working for companies employing at least 1,000 people in their U.S. operations. The full rankings are available online.
