Supporting All Children After Acts of Hate

April 24th, 2019

HCPSS Superintendent Michael J. Martirano today issued the below statement, following the April 21 terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka:

As we welcome students and staff back this week, I recognize that the church bombings that occurred over the holiday weekend shook many of our children and families. As news of these despicable acts were shared on social media and televisions in our community, my attention shifts to the impact that these disturbing images have on many children. We must continue to take special care of all of our children so they feel safe and welcomed in school and throughout our communities.

Though horrified at these terrible actions of religious intolerance, I also feel so fortunate to live in Howard County, a community that embraces religious diversity and freedom, and where leaders of all faiths come together to support all residents. While we value diverse cultures, religions, backgrounds and experiences, not everybody in this world shares our acceptance. Hatred too often appears to terrorize innocent and peaceful people for reasons I can’t begin to fully understand.

I urge parents and caregivers to talk with your children about what they may be thinking and feeling, and remind them that dedicated staff members are ready to support them at any time during the school day. Our website offers resources that can help you with these difficult conversations.

I am very appreciative of the accepting and supporting community where I chose to raise my family and now serve as Superintendent.
