Staff Focus: Lori Miller, ESOL Support Counselor

Growing up, HCPSS ESOL Support Counselor Lori Miller’s dream job was to be a foreign ambassador. In her current role, Miller supports English learners at Long Reach High School, Oakland Mills High School and the Applications and Research Laboratory (ARL), so as she sees it: “I feel that’s what I do now by working with families and students from all over the world.”

Howard County Regional History Day Winners Move on to State Level Competition

The Howard County Public School System recently hosted its 14th annual History Day Competition at Reservoir High School. After months of researching, 282 students in Grades 6–12 presented on topics that relate to this year’s National History Day theme of “Conflict & Compromise in History.”

An alumna of Wilde Lake, Caporaletti excels as a jack of all trades, doing whatever needs to be done to help the shows shine bright.

Statement from the Interim Superintendent on Planned Student Walkouts

In response to recent tragedies in our nation’s schools, many students are planning to participate in national walkouts or other awareness events. This Wednesday, a national effort is underway for students to walk out of classes at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes to remember the victims of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and discuss gun violence.

HCPSS Board of Education Selects Mission Road Site for High School #13

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) Board of Education voted to move forward with the Mission Road site for new high school #13. The Board directed staff to complete the acquisition of Mission Road for the purposes of constructing the new high school, which is slated to open in 2023.

Board of Education Adopts FY2019 Operating and Capital Budget, and FY 2020-2024 Capital Improvement Program Requests

The Howard County Board of Education last night adopted its Operating Budget Request for the 2018–2019 school year (FY 2019) totaling $906.8 million. The amount requested represents $87.7 million, or 10.7 percent, over the amount funded for the FY 2018 school year as well an additional $50.5 million request for one-time funds over the next several years.
