Board of Education Reviews Policy on Responsible Use of Technology and Social Media in Howard County Public Schools

The Howard County Board of Education received recommendations for strengthening Board Policy 8080, “Responsible Use of Technology and Social Media,” yesterday to ensure equitable use of technology, and to add definitions for digital tools and personally identifiable information. The public hearing on Policy 8080 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., May 12 in the Board Room at the HCPSS central office, 10910 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City, Maryland.

Today, the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) announced a public awareness campaign to support the responsible use of technology and social media by students and adults. HCPSS will engage student groups and other stakeholders in activities that promote positive messages and activities this school year and next.

Board Approves 2016–2017 Academic Calendar

The Howard County Board of Education agreed last night to ask the Maryland State Department of Education to waive one inclement weather day for the current school year. If approved, the last day of school for students and teachers will be Friday, June 17.

The Board also approved the 2016–2017 academic calendar. The next school year will begin on August 29 for students and on August 22 for teachers. Winter break will be Dec. 26–30, with schools reopening on Jan. 2, 2017. Spring break will run from April 10–17, 2017. The last day of school for students and teachers is scheduled for June 13, 2017.
