HCPSS Initiates School Resource Officer Program Review

Superintendent Michael J. Martirano presented “School Resource Officers in Schools,” a report to the Howard County Board of Education during the Board’s regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, September 24. In presenting the report, Martirano initiated the first step in a highly-anticipated, extended conversation about the roles, purpose and outcomes of School Resource Officers (SROs) in Howard County schools, which will involve all school system stakeholders.

Mount View Middle School Named 2020 National Blue Ribbon School

The U.S. Department of Education recently recognized Mount View Middle School as one of 367 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2020. Mount View was selected for the Exemplary High Performing Schools category, which honors the state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

HCPSS Seeks Members for Pupil Transportation Policy Advisory Committee, Apply by Sept. 28, 2020

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) invites county residents to take an active role in developing and revising school system policies as members of policy advisory committees. HCPSS is currently seeking candidates for membership on the 2020-2021 Policy Advisory Committee for Policy 5200 Pupil Transportation.

HCPSS Earns ASBO Meritorious Budget Award

The Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International has awarded the Howard County Public School System with the Meritorious Budget Award in recognition of excellence in the preparation and issuance of the HCPSS operating budget for fiscal year 2020-2021. The FY2021 budget included numerous improvements and enhancements to the budget presentation and the budget’s connection to the HCPSS Strategic Call to Action: Learning and Leading with Equity.

Empowering Parents as Partners Virtual Conference, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2020

The HCPSS Department of Special Education invites parents, guardians and all caregivers to participate in the virtual 2nd annual Parent Empowerment Conference September 29-October 1. Two sessions will be offered each night, at 6:30-7:30 p.m. and 7:45-8:45 p.m. Conference registrants may choose to participate in as many sessions as they wish.

Superintendent Presents Capital Budget Proposals

Howard County Public School System Superintendent Michael J. Martirano presented his Proposed Capital Budget for fiscal year 2021-2022 (FY 2022), FY 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Program, and FY 2022–2031 Long-Range Master Plan to the Board of Education during its regularly scheduled virtual meeting on Thursday, September 10, 2020. The proposed $108.0 million capital budget, $363.6 million capital improvement program and $821.7 million long-range master plan work in conjunction with the school system’s operating budget, redistricting processes and Health Fund deficit elimination plan toward fulfilling the goals and priorities of the HCPSS Strategic Call to Action.

HCPSS Seeks Members for Academic Calendar Planning Committee, Apply by Sept. 21

The HCPSS invites citizens to take an active role in developing the 2021-2022 academic calendar. The knowledge, experience and perspective shared by community stakeholders is used to improve the calendar and ensure transparency at every stage of the calendar development process.

Food and Fun To Go Program in Lisbon

This summer, Lisbon Elementary School has partnered with the Howard County Local Children’s Board, Roving Radish, Howard County Library System, Lisbon United Methodist Church and The Grill at Lisbon to provide a food and enrichment program for Lisbon Elementary School families. For the six-week program, the Food and Fun To Go Program distributed more than 600 meal kits to more than 120 individuals and families, and upon request, families also received diapers and baby food. On the final day, students received backpacks filled with school supplies.

HCPSS Seeks Members for Policy Advisory Committees

HCPSS is currently seeking candidates for membership on the following 2020-2021 Policy Advisory Committees: Policy 6010 School Attendance Areas and Policy 9260 Student Search and Seizure. Applications are due by September 1, 2020

HCPSS 2020-2021 Reopening Plan Posted Online

The Howard County Public School System Reopening Plan for the 2020-2021 school year is posted on the HCPSS website. The plan fulfills all requirements of the Maryland Department of Education’s Maryland Together: Maryland’s Recovery Plan for Education ahead of the August 14 MSDE deadline.
