School Safety Follow-Up Message, Sept. 24, 2026

This message is to follow up on the information shared with staff and families Wednesday, September 23.

Threats of violence and discriminatory language are being shared on social media and/or via email, toward schools in Howard County and also to public school districts and higher education institutions across the state. There is no evidence that Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) systems and platforms, including Canvas, were hacked. A few student accounts were found to be compromised and the bad actors used Canvas to send threats broadly to large numbers of students. Compromised accounts were immediately suspended and students were notified to reset passwords.

Students or staff who believe their password has been compromised can use the account self-service site to change their password. All users can select the forgot password button on login pages.

Thus far, these threats have been found to be non-credible and seemingly originating overseas. That being said, HCPSS takes all threats seriously, and responds to any threat with the appropriate level of urgency. HCPSS continues to work closely with law enforcement partners to investigate all threats made against HCPSS students, staff and/or facilities.

Please remind students that sharing threats with each other or posting on social media can hinder law enforcement investigations and cause undue fear. Anyone who receives or sees a threat should report it immediately by calling 911. Anonymous tips can be shared with the Howard County Police Department by calling 410-313-STOP or emailing hcpdcrimetips@howardcountymd.gov.

The safety of students, staff and families is HCPSS’ highest priority. HCPSS has student services teams in every school available to support the social-emotional well-being of children every school day, and especially during times of increased stress. Staff or students who would benefit from support are encouraged to connect with a counselor, student services staff or trusted adult at their school. HCPSS also has a number of resources for families, available online.
