HCPSS Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education Staff Engage in Adapted Sports Professional Learning
August 21st, 2025
Adapted Physical Education (APE) Instructional Facilitator Katie Prichard teamed up with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Facilitator Scott Callahan to lead a professional learning session about how to incorporate adapted sports into Physical Education (PE) instruction.
Middle school PE, Unified PE and Leadership, Sports for Life, and APE teachers discussed the cultural aspects of adapted sports and the importance of accessibility and inclusion in alignment with the HCPSS Equity Framework and Strategic Plan. Participants learned practical strategies for incorporating wheelchair basketball, goalball, sitting volleyball and boccia into learning activities, practiced using different equipment, and explored best practices to foster inclusive and supportive PE environments for all learners.
“Adapted sport instruction allows students with and without disabilities to experience movement in ways that are often missing from traditional PE,” said Prichard. “By weaving universal accommodations and choices into instruction, teachers can maximize independence and make PE more personally relevant for all learners.”
Prichard added, “Collaboration between PE and APE teachers fosters belonging and growth for students, while also recognizing the unique expertise APE teachers contribute to highlighting students’ abilities.”
