HCPSS Students Advance to Maryland History Day Competition

March 26th, 2025

Forty-three students placed first, second or third in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) National History Day® Competition, held on March 22 at Guilford Park High School. More than 343 students submitted 222 project entries to the countywide competition, representing 20 middle schools, eight high schools, one independent school and homeschooled students across Howard County. In addition, Jennifer Coker, a U.S. History teacher at Reservoir High School, was awarded the title of Howard County National History Day Teacher of the Year.

Thirty-two students now advance to the Maryland History Day Competition after placing first or second in the countywide competition. The state-level competition will take place on May 3 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, followed by the National History Day competition in June.

This year’s National History Day theme is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.” A research question guided students to explore and interpret both primary and secondary resources. After gathering data and research, students analyzed the information, drew conclusions and began creation of the National History Day project entry to submit for review at their local school level prior to entering the countywide competition.
