HCPSS and The Council of Elders Community Academies, 2024-2025 School Year

HCPSS and The Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County (TCOE) have partnered to sponsor a parent workshops series consisting of four sessions during the 2024-2025 school year. The sessions will be held on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. The first three sessions will be held virtually; the fourth will be held in person. - October 12, 2024 (virtual session): Navigating the Howard County Public School System
- December 14, 2024 (virtual session): HCPSS Career Pathways
- January 11, 2025 (virtual session): Student Well-Being
- April 5, 2025 (in-person session): Healthy and Unhealthy Relationships
- Engage in breakout sessions for the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
- Learn how to help their child with friendships and manage peer conflict.
- Learn how to identify abuse in teen relationship.
- Gain skills and strategies to intervene, if needed.
This virtual session focuses on how to effectively maintain communication with your child’s school. HCPSS staff will provide a parent demonstration on how to monitor student performance utilizing school system online resources. The session also will provide strategies to help ensure successful parent-teacher conferences.
This session explores the variety of career-focused educational opportunities within HCPSS designed to prepare students for success in post-secondary education, the workforce, and beyond. Learn how HCPSS provides students with a robust blend of academic coursework, hands-on learning experiences, and career exploration activities to connect them with resources and opportunities that guide them toward successful careers in a wide range of fields.
Families who attend this session will hear from HCPSS staff about student well-being support, strategies to manage student anxiety, and learn more about community agencies that support families with managing mental health challenges.
