HCPSS Relaunches ESOL Program as English Language Development
July 1st, 2024
Effective July 1, 2024, HCPSS will change the name of its ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program to ELD, or English Language Development, to better create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all students and families.
Why This Change?
- Positive Focus: ELD emphasizes the process of learning and developing English language skills, making it more inclusive and positive for all students.
- Clear and Accurate: Not all students needing English support speak another language at home. ELD better reflects our mission to help all students improve their English proficiency.
- Consistency: Many schools already use ELD to describe these programs. This change will help ensure everyone understands and communicates better within the educational community.
- Supporting Our Teachers: Referring to ELD teachers clearly defines their role and highlights their expertise in helping students learn English. This also respects and acknowledges the diverse backgrounds of our students.
What Does This Mean for Students and Families?
- Same Great Support: The services and support students receive will remain, and all schools have an ELD teacher.
- New Name: Families will see ELD instead of ESOL in HCPSS and school communications and materials.
