Waverly ES Teacher Wins Financial Education Excellence Award

Waverly Elementary School Gifted and Talented teacher Amy Cargiulo has been honored with the Maryland Financial Education and Capability Award for elementary school teachers. The award—offered through a partnership between the Maryland State Department of Education, the Maryland Council on Economic Education (MCEE), and the ​​CASH (Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope) Campaign of Maryland—recognizes teachers, individuals, and organizations who serve as leaders in financial education and are helping students to build financial skills and knowledge.

Cargiulo was selected based, in part, for her effective use of the Stock Market Game, a 10-week simulation in which students manage a hypothetical $100,000 investment portfolio and learn about budgeting, decision making and personal finance, as well as about the Federal Reserve, interest rates, quarterly reports, and inflation. She also s a member of the MCEE Teacher Advisory Board and has helped former students create Stock Market Clubs in their high school.

“Mrs. Cargiulo is so deserving of this prestigious award,” says Waverly Principal Dr. Rachel Edoho-Eket. “She has brought many fantastic financial literacy programs to the school and our students are extremely excited to learn and become experts on the stock market! Our families are also excited to get involved and learn alongside their children. It’s been amazing to witness!”

Cargiulo and her fellow award winners were highlighted during a reception and on the floor of the Maryland General Assembly in March.
