HCPSS Coaches Among State Coaches of the Year

February 14th, 2024

River Hill High School Boys’ Golf Coach Matt Graves and Howard High School Girls’ Basketball Coach Scott Robinson have been named among 18 high school coaches from across Maryland to be selected as 2022-2023 National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches of the Year. Robinson also was selected by the NFHS Coaches Committee as a Section II coach of the year.

River Hill High School Athletics and Activities Manager James Creighton nominated Graves for this year’s award. He notes that Graves has been the head coach of the golf team at River Hill since 2005, and that he has led the RHHS team to county, district and state championships—including back-to-back state titles in 2022 and 2023. Creighton describes Graves as having a love for the game of golf and a passion for coaching.

HCPSS Director of Athletics John Davis agrees, noting that Graves has “really raised the bar for championship golf in the state of Maryland,” and dominated the competition in recent years. Davis adds that “[Graves’] calm demeanor on the course makes him the perfect mentor for young golfers of any caliber.”

Robinson has coached the Howard team since 2010. Davis describes him as having “an extraordinary grasp of what it takes to be successful at the highest level of high school basketball,” adding that Robinson does an outstanding job of relaying his knowledge to his players. “You can always tell a team coached by Scott Robinson by their disciplined play on the court and their attention to detail,” Davis says.

The NFHS annually honors a Coach of the Year in the top girls’ sports and top boys
sports by participation numbers and success as a head coach. Coaches are nominated through NFHS and a committee of voters from the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association votes on the winners. Winners must be active coaches during the year for which they receive their award.
