Earlier this month, students in Kayla Hughes’ science classes at Guilford Park High School (GPHS) teamed up with staff from Howard County’s Department of Recreation and Parks, the County Office of Community Sustainability, Howard EcoWorks, and the Howard County Conservancy to plant 100 trees around the softball field on the GPHS campus. The project is part of the county’s Students Branching Out program, which engages Howard County students in local tree planting efforts.

The new trees will help prevent flooding and erosion on the GPHS campus. Hughes also expects to use the trees when her students study climate change and carbon sequestration this spring.

GPHS is the latest HCPSS school to participate in the Students Branching Out program. Students at 27 other HCPSS schools have planted more than 4,800 trees on school grounds in the program’s history.
