Forty-Seven HCPSS Students Commit to Apprenticeships During Apprenticeship Maryland Signing Day

August 9th, 2023

On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, 47 Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) seniors took part in the Apprenticeship Maryland Signing Day, committing to participate in the Apprenticeship Maryland Program over the next year. This is the largest group of participating HCPSS students since the program began in 2019.

“A critical part of a student’s journey through our school system is to prepare for life beyond graduation and I am so pleased to see the considerable growth in apprenticeships this year. Today is a celebration of these students who, by choosing to be a part of the Apprenticeship Maryland program, have the opportunity to gain critical career skills” said HCPSS Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano. “I commend the students in attendance for their commitment to forging a successful future, and I am grateful to the dedicated employers who have partnered with our school system to offer our students this valuable opportunity to learn and earn.”

This school year, the students will take part in a paid, supervised, structured, on-the-job training program while also attending school, working with local businesses in the fields of construction and development, healthcare, the environment, education, and information technology.

The Signing Day event formalizes the commitment between the students in the Apprenticeship Maryland Program and their employers by recognizing the students who decided to invest in their future, their parents for supporting them throughout their education, and the partnering businesses for investing in students to address the needs of today’s workforce. The program is a partnership between the Maryland Department of Labor, Howard County Office of Workforce Development, Howard Community College, and local employers.
